Broken Laptop repairs

Postby Squids » Sun Dec 11, 2011 6:44 pm

I have a couple of old laptops that I would like to get working again due to the files and programs they have on them.

One has a cracked LED screen, how much would this cost to get fixed?

The other had a damaged hard disk, I punched the keyboard  so is physical damage, do I need to buy a new one, new copy of windows etc? Or is there some change a tech guy could restore it? once again price? My old man could put in the new hard disk..

Thanks for any help you may be able to offer, I really need to be more careful.

I have used a guy who runs a PC repair business in the Western Suburbs. He charged me a combined fee for a screen and keyboard which we claimed on insurance (have you got accidental damage cover?) so I couldn't tell you what the screen on its own was. Then our toddler dropped the laptop again and we had another job for him. That was under $100 for a getting my screen working again and fixing the screen hinge.

Let me know if you want his details.

Dutchy on here fixed his own screen and recommended i try it. I wasn't game in the end to do it myself and we used the insurance claim but you could try it.

I was thinking about trying it myself, then I thought about getting one of those cords that puts the laptop screen to a LED screen tv...however I am not sure that would work as the crap screen might appear on the tv...

Both times with our laptop there was a tiny little cable that runs from the laptop body to the screen that had come loose and he had to reconnect it. The first time the screen was also cracked. The second time it was just that little cable plus the hinge was busted. These are probably simple repairs that most of the gurus on here could easily fix themselves. I just don't have the confidence to try it and this guy does a good job. The costs aren't massive so I figure what cost for my time in stuffing around myself? I have never been great with fixing electronics.

Don't let me put you off though. I looked online at how to fix the screen and it didn't seem that hard. My main worry was damaging something else in the process and so still needing to take it to a specialist to fix.
