This is going to sound very stupid so please bear with me.

I played golf all through high school (late 80’s early 90’s) before it was cool ;) before the world of hybrids and I stopped playing golf for 20 odd years. I have never used hybrids, I’ve just kept using the same irons that I used when in HS. Tommy Armour 845s.

I have been gifted 3 hybrids by my old man and I can’t get my head around them.

Is a 3 hybrid supposed to go further than a 3 iron or is it supposed to be the same but more forgiving.

I can’t hit the stupid things when going to the driving range so should I stick with what I know, or keep persisting?

3 hybrid should replace the 5 wood/ 3 iron. Older gents seem to put more hybirds in the bag to replace the longer irons. In theory it should be easier to hit hybrid than long iron.

I run driver, 3 wood, 3 hybrid and 4 iron. I've seen up to a 6 hybrid at times.

If you're serious about the game again might be time to upgrade the Tommys and get fitted for clubs.

I have a 16 degree (goes 185-90) and a 19 degree hybrid (170-75) and find them much easier to hit than long irons, especially out of the rough. Try slowing your swing speed down and let the club do the work, I find I stuff them up when I try to hit them too hard.

I have a hybrid, used to love it off the tee, always a low ball baby draw and plenty of run.... now it's been dropped because it doesn't work.
Hybrids will be more forgiving. A typicsl miss with a hybrid will be a hook as they are made that way.
Good for the rough and good for around the greens for bump and runs.

Thanks for the feedback... I am looking at starting to play more regularly, well more regularly that once a year, and may look at getting fitted for some clubs after our visit to the UK mid year.

Can't quite see the Minister for Everything allowing the purchase of new clubs if it will minimize the spending power she has overseas...

I'm heading to the driving range after work today, so will give them another go, will slow the swing down and see what happens... I may even keep them in the bag for my round at the Gully on Friday morning.

Slow the swing down or even lighten the grip to allow the club head weight to get through the ball
