I think handshakes are mandatory for blokes.

A guy who doesn't shake your hand, or gives a weak shake, can't be trusted.

In terms of wives/partners, read their body language and let that be your guide. In my opinion, a peck on the cheek is sufficient, but if your mate (or your missus) is touchy about that sort of thing, a handshake should be enough.

Handshake always with the bloke.
Let the lady dictate if its a kiss hello or not and follow her lead.

Close female friends get a hug with a squeeze at the end.

New female friends or ones I dont actually like get an awkward wave until they initiate the first hug.

Also, a no-no to blokes hugging each other like on telly when they meet or for trivial things or after a run-of-the-mill sport win or where they're not really close mates. Okay for a special occasion, wedding, funeral, GF, etc

Agree in the main with FC about a weak handshake but needs to be read with their overall body language. I have a mate who isn't a jock or too knockabout with a very soft handshake, but I would fully trust him.

Sort of a touch on the arm half hug sort of thing for the woman, depends on who it is, I probably was a bit too friendly in the past without realizing it.

There are always exceptions to the rule, I think. You're mate seems like one of them.
