What's your vet like?

Postby Footy Chick » Tue Dec 18, 2012 7:36 pm

Went to my vet today to pick up some cat food and ask some advice as to why my cat might all of a sudden decided to pee on the carpet this morning.

Thinking they might offer me some advice as to possibilities, the only response I got was that I had to bring her in and pay $150 for urine tests.

Me: I don't expect a full diagnosis, just some reasons why this could be happening.

Nurse: I'm not a vet so I couldn't tell you and we're not allowed to diagnose without looking at the animal because it could be a number of things.

Me: like what?

Nurse: I can't say, you'll need to bring her in.

So much for friendly advice as to possibilities

So I ask, what is your vet like? Are they money grabbing bastards like mine now appears to be, or are they happy to offer advice?

PS: If anyone in the Nth Eastern suburbs has a decent vet, feel free to give me details because I'm now seriously thinking of changing.

Sadly some vets have priced themselves out of reach of average pet owners. I have a cat and dog so visit a vet annually for check ups vaccination updates etc. I bailed out of using the Clare vets who are outrageously expensive and now go to Port Pirie who is more realistic. Clare is full of trendy nouveau riche while Pirie is not, so it makes sense.

I like my vet, and they treat Chops well, but they are very similar in that its always a response of 'bring her in just in case' when i just want an answer to a few simple questions - very frustrating!
I'm proud of you fellas. You all kept your head on a swivel, and that's what you gotta do when you find yourself in a vicious cock fight!

I am very lucky with our vet I ring for advice and when she is free she rings back and we discuss several options/possibilities, or further analysis I may need to do. She has not charged me for consultations on tricky issues. She came to our home to put down a loved dog once that had become too frail and her and the husband took it away for cremation afterwards.
I once had a dying puppy that she got up for at 6.00am to open up the surgery to put it on a drip.
She will ring me out of the blue asking about issues I have raised previously to see how they are going. She loves the animals. I have recommended her to many now very happy customers.
You will have to come up to Aldgate though to see her.

Ring Mrs Jimmy - we spend half my salary on vets so she should have some idea

On another note, be very careful of the RSPCA pet insurance.
It's not quite an Indian boiler room, but it's close.
Mrs Jimmy made an enquiry and we have since been harassed by them.

Probably a different situation up in Gawler, but we have called our vet on the telephone, and the nurse has brought the vet to the phone, where he has been happy to give us free advice. ie try this & that, if that doesn't succeed, bring the animal in.
Unfortunately, that kind of service evaporates the nearer the city you get.

I love my vet, cheaper than going to the doctor. Trouble is, he doesn't bulk bill.
