The Chile Earhquake the latest one
Several hundred dead, the devastion vast

On this day 56 years ago on a warmish early morning Adelaide had an earthquake
01/03/54
A morning that impacted on Adelaide, a quake that people today may be unaware of

Ive talked to a couple of people about it
They both recollected about the movement, the noises, the damage
Old timers will talk about the red hot summer of 39, and the quake of 54

Ive been in one earthquake
1981 I was awoken and my bed was swaying away and back in a sliding motion
I was unaware of what it was
I was not sure if it was an Earthquake, or a dream or whatever
2 days later I read in the paper it was a quake of about 4 rating [page 5 !]
Where was it ?
Surprise surprise San Francisco !

Does anyone know much about this quake of 54 in Adelaide ?

Nope - but I remember asking my dad about it once.

He was a mere teenager living on Kangaroo Island.
Was in bed at the time and even over there felt his bed 'shake'

SQAURK , nice link...

There is a story in there about a cricket game SA V VI
From a Joslin refererence
Mr H was in the SS team at the time
On the Sunday rest day the SA team took there Victorian counterparts to the Barossa fr a drink or two.
Mr H woke up after being hit in the head by the wall.
He found himself looking at a one foot gap between the ceiling joints and the wall, but thinking, ""I only had one red and one white."

Mr H
=
G Hole
K Horsenell
?
Both were in that team

Just for the record

Back some 30+ years ago there was a localised Earth Tremor in the Morphett Vale area, relatively small on the Richter scale, yet what I remember was the actual wall of the brick veneer house actually shaking and there was an article in the then local Southern Times about it and how it had caused a bloke to come off his motorbike when it happened.

Hey folks. I'm in Santiago at the moment for work. Was a few 100 kms north of Santiago in the town of Combarbalá during the earthquake. Was around 3.35am when I was awoken by rhythmic noises in my room (a room made from mud). The bed was moving as if there was a woman on top having some fun, but, alas, I was all alone. Noises were mostly from stuff hanging of the walls. Quite eerie. Got out of bed, open my motel door, and saw one of my colleagues outside in the car park in only his underpants (not the prettiest site I might say!!). I said to him "this is an earthquake, isn't it?" to which he replied "bloody oath thats an earthquake"...I thought ok, that was easy, its over with now. Went back to bed and heard the bad news in the moring. Seeing we were ~500-600km NNE of the epicentre the impact was subdued...probably around Magnitude 5 where we were...I judge that purely from the 6.1 aftershock I experienced here on the 7th floor of my Santiago hotel this morning. During this episode the hotel staff apparently started beckoning people to sit down and eat their breakfast as everyone ran for the stairs. It was as if it was an everyday event...the "big one" had come and gone, no need to panic now.

The short of it is that its remarkable how little damage there is in Santiago. I have only seen a few pedestrain bridges down. Its a real tribute to the local engineering that a city can be hit by an 8.5 and have so little damage. The poorer areas have fared much worse of course (old houses and lodges). Much much worse south of Santiago, particularly the area around Talca and Concepcion. Airport is closed due to damage to terminal...I was supposed to be getting on a flight back to Oz right now. Not sure when I'm returning yet, but if it takes too long we'll drive to Argentina and get a fare from Buenos Aires. No fear here, just another quiet Sunday in Santiago.

Bed time. Until later

I recall a tremor around 1997 (March maybe?); I know the time of day was 4:50pm.

For recent earthquakes in South Australia, here is the link.

http://www.pir.sa.gov.au/minerals/earthquakes/recent_earthquakes_in_sa

They are quite a common event in the mid north.

I was 10 when Adelaide had its earthquake in 1954 and I slept right through it.
I was cross nobody thought to wake me so I didn't miss it - my mother's excuse she was worried I'd be scared..
I experienced several mild ones during my 10 years in the Dandenong Ranges in Victoria.
