I think they are in that you (apparently) feel indestructable on the gear....surely that gives you an advantage out on the field backing into packs etc against clean blokes who will have that fear in them...
Thoughts?

1980TM and Psyber have made some excellent comments on this in other threads
So I accept that some of the 'recreational' drugs can be performance-enhancing
Whether the player takes them to assist training or takes them before the game for a pep-up - or whether he takes them for social reasons and they just happen to assist in training or playing - means there is a slight different to a Marion Jones case, for example.
Intentionally taking a substance with the sole reason to improvement sporting performance is different from taking recreational drugs that may also assist sporting performance, if you get my very long-winded

drift .....
Stay away from both would be my advice!!!

One thing I've always wondered about "performance enhancing" substances, is why something like Panadol isn't included (maybe it is and Im just unaware).
Just as a player might use a Steriod to increase recovery rate for an injury, doesn't panadol/nurofen/etc effectively do the same thing?
Drawing a long bow I know because one is socially acceptable, but similar comparisons can be drawn to some extent.

Putting further thought into this question, I am perplexed (not surprising given how little I know on the topic).
We established in another thread that they are considered performance enhancing by ASADA - and they are the ones that matter as they perform the tests.
Are they performance enhancing whilst 'active' in the system - specifically when one is off their brain? Or are performance enhancing effects evident once the buzz has gone?
Surely someone off their brain has severely limited their performance?
I think my point is more long-winded than yours, Hondo.

CP I have heard this debate on the radio and there seems to be a line drawn between drugs that restore original performance (such as pain relief) and drugs that improve original performance
I'd guess there's a big line of grey in the middle

Depending on the dosage and method of administering, one does't necessarily get "off their brain" whilst under the influence of Amphetamines mate ... Ummm .. Apparently.
I had a mate who used to regularly indulge prior to playing at Amateur League level, and he actually won the association medla (lower grade) that year, yet looked as pale as a ghost when he took the field.

Ahh good one Hondo, that is an excellent point you make and one I had always overlooked, cheers!!

Thanks CP, I guess that makes sense - if they aren't taking them on game day to get off their brain they must be takingn them to enhance performance.
Lucky we've got some blokes around here with "mates" who know stuff...

LOL yes, bery fortunate indeed!
Many truckies were (dunno about still) regularly using Amphetamines to meet the ridiculous schedules placed upon them, suggesting that often the drug allows you to keep your wits about you, but perhaps give one an enhanced feeling of energy? If this is the case that would have to support performance enhancing I guess.

Would have to say Amphet is a performance enhancing drug, haiving been involved with aspects of it (and that is not taking them) it definately does have an affect on ones body. It does give alot of energy whilst I wouldn't say one wits are still about them, it does have quite an affect. Without going into specifics as it is XXX rated, one guy went for over 4 hours hammer and tongs after shooting up amphet. However like any drug, the body gets used to it and you then have to either up the dosage or go onto something stronger such as ice or heroin. Interestingly enough after amphet topped the list for the most consumed, injected drug for the last couple of years in S.A. once again heroin has taken over because of it's stronger tripping affect

Shit you are grumpy bastard!
FWIW, I reckon this sort of stuff might be performance enhancing, but not indefinetely. I reckon continued exposure to such substances would actually harm your levels of performance.

REB

Initially, they will assist you only in the courage factor-that's all-but over a period of time, they will have a negative effect on you because of your poor diet, lack of consistent sleep, wanting to root everyone & anyone, dentist trips due to teeth grinding down & rotting away, deteriorating fitness & lack of enthusiasm to train hard & exert yourself. They are not performance enhancing at all-how could they possibly be?

Broadly speaking there are stimulants and sedatives. Mild doses of sedatives may improve performance by reducing anxiety, but more slows you down. Stimulants give you energy but too much of them may make your mental focus a bit dubious or even trigger a psychotic state. It is all about how you use them...which you shouldn't!

Not technically no calorie content (i.e. energy) in amphetemines, their effect on the bodies ability to stimulate energy production and breakdown ATP is unquestioned

That's what I was talking about the ATP -> ADP ->AMP, plus the direct adrenaline like effects on the cardiovascular and respiratory systems. I just didn't bother to spell out the technical detail.
[I didn't go into noradrenaline and dopamine like effects in the CNS either, or the spill over if the stuff is not pure.]

I would have thought that illicit drugs were performance enhancing only whilst you were high?
