Legalising gay marriage in Australia is just a matter of time now. It is ridiculous that Australia has not legalised it to date and we watch on as our NZ cousins show themselves to be a more progressive and socially equitable society.
So many people will just cross the ditch to get hitched and the sheer weight of numbers of legally married gay couples in Australia will force reform in time.

i agree Roxy, however it isnt as easy as that. currently any gay marriages performed over there wouldnt be recognised under australian law, however i believe the greens are proposing a bill to change that. if that gets up* it shouldnt be long before the next step, however if it fails it could still be some time yet before gay marriage is legalised here.

I would think that Greens bill would be very, very unlikely to pass through and become law.

There are a lot of no votes but not as many no posts. Why do people disagree with the idea?

I voted "Yes" because I think "gay" couples should have the right to publicly commit to each other if they want to, and those unions should thus be recognised under property, pension, and superannuation law. However, I have reservations about it including any automatic right to acquire children by adoption or IVF.

This is not because I think "gay" people are in any way perverse, but because I don't think Medicare should fund IVF at all in an overpopulated world, and believe that adoption needs to be based on an objective look at what is best for the child and not be at risk of becoming a pawn of political correctness.
