Already started the prep work for the Olympic Dam Expansion. So it must be at least a 75% of a goer if they are going to burn money doing the preliminary works before final approval going ahead.

Developments/Projects in SA

Postby White Line Fever » Thu May 31, 2012 12:12 pm

Gotta admit I've been hearing the rumours roxby is gonna be put on hold.

I hope not though.

And one more issue is that it seems there is a lot of interstate companies being awarded contracts over here at the moment...

I almost vomited when I saw the front page of the newspaper the other day. We are spending half a billion on that half arsed project yet the state has debt spiraling out of control. Does the SA government use the same financial advisors as Greece and Spain?

This will be a broken promise project seen as the state is in debt (according to the budget mid week).

13 stories - is too high for the adelaide city council....what a friggen joke!!

And now we hear that a go ahead from BHP is at least two years away. Possibly longer. Thoughts Ashman?

The state government has a development plan for when there is no development..
Jack Snelling was on radio today talking about phasing out Stamp Duty and phasing in an annual Land tax on residential properties.
(The government can control and predict the income from a Land Tax, by adjusting the rate, whereas S/Duty can be controlled by tax payers in hard times by choosing not the buy.)

He did suggest a "Commonwealth solution" may be a better option.
Are we being prepared for the debt-ridden states to support increasing the GST?

I think the punter can afford a modest rise to a 12 percent GST and that gives them the choice of buyer pays (if you don’t spend you don’t pay the tax). Of course essential items should be added to the exemption list, clothes, ipod, iphone, ipad, etc.

English VAT is 17.5% and not included in the advertised price so you have to remember to add it in your head.
Is this where we are going??

I don't know whether anything is exempted there.

That would give the debt-ridden governments here more room to buy votes next election.

Olympic Dam expansion deferred ... not unexpected

http://www.adelaidenow.com.au/bhp-cance ... 6455884519

BHP Billiton has shelved its $US20 billion Olympic Dam expansion and will go back to the drawing board to find a cheaper alternative.

Market conditions, subdued commodity prices and higher capital costs led to the decision, said chief executive Marius Kloppers in a statement.

"As we finalised the details of the project ... it became clear that the right decision for the company and its shareholders was to continue studies to develop a less capital-intensive option to replace the underground mine at Olympic Dam," Mr Kloppers said.

"Value is always our primary consideration. We believe today's decision reflects an appropriate, prudent and disciplined course of action."

The news came as BHP Billiton announced a 21 per cent fall in annual profit of $US17.1 billion.

The global miner has written down $US242 million on the project this financial year as rumours circulated today that 100 Adelaide-based staff working the project would lose their jobs.

But it doesn't mean the end of the project, Mr Kloppers said.

"The long-term outlook for the copper market remains strong and we will continue to work closely with all stakeholders as we refine our longer term development plans for this unique, world-class ore body.

"We want to find the right solution to unlock this resource."

it's no so much 'our' economy, it's the world commodity prices, in particular copper that forced this decision I suspect.

The ore is not going anywhere so why not expand at a time and at a prudent cost to maximise return.
