Just looking at an I email sent, and started thinking about what people think are acceptable sign offs (ie. regards, sincerely) on emails between companies.

I only ask because I write "cheers" and sometimes wonder if people think I'm unprofessional, or a douchebag.

Im well aware a fair few on here think the latter.

I normally use Cheers or Kind regards. Depends on my mood.

These are the sort of things I think about. I've never claimed to be an interesting person.

Pick your audience mate. Someone you have a good working relationship with, or have met and would be happy to have a beer with, then go with Cheers.

Someone you haven't met or someone far more senior in both age and position, then professionalism and respect will go further and ensure you don't "cross the line".

I've always wondered why the archaic sounding term "Kind regards" has persisted. It always feels awkward and artificial to me.
I assume it had some meaning once other than the vague impression I get that one may be being kind to bother having regard for the recipient. ;)

So, if I know people well personally, I open with "Hi ....." and sign "Regards"
If it is more of a casual business communication, and I don't know the recipient at all, well enough to really have any significant regard for them, I open with "Hello ...." and just sign off with my name.

If the communication is formal to any extent I use "Dear ......." and end with Yours sincerely or Yours faithfully as is appropriate just as in a formal letter.
( "Dear Sir - Yours faithfully", or, "Dear Mr Jones - Yours sincerely".)
