One thing Ive learnt about watching my (and mates) teenagers growing up and going thru school is that they all find their way in life and school results are not the be all and end all that many parents feel they are. Real life experience and work is so much more valuable in growing their character and building relationships/social skills IMO.

Absolutely, seeing the kids I coached at footy and cricket that are now approaching 30 is quite rewarding, they weren't the most academically minded but they have found their niche in life and have kids and mortgages, I love seeing their progress.

Even though I sometimes have to get up at 4 to take my son to work which is half an hour in the opposite direction to where I work it's pleasing to know he isn't just attending school for the social aspect or sitting on his arse playing the xbox.

That's where I think the school system is somewhat broken as it doesn't really cater at any level for students who aren't academically enthused. I love a lot of the stories coming out of the St Patricks Technical School.

Its definitely not the end of world, I have mates who completed uni and are still struggling to find work in their elite, ultra specialist field whilst many who didn't even finish year 10 have started up businesses of all sorts and doing great things. Then there are the ones who were a nightmare at school and exactly what you would expect them to be as an adult

I think you find that they do a hell of a lot more now, there are a lot more programs for teenagers now via the school system that can fast track them into trades.

Absolutely. My daughter left school in the middle of year 10, her school counsellor was no help to us as parents and lots to her as a student, we weren't happy at the time but it's turned out just fine. She's got an amazing work ethic and has forged herself a career as a barber. She's 21 at the end of the month and earns around $60k per year with growth to come.

What you will probably find is those kids ( like LM ) have good role models in the home who set good examples for work ethic.

The bottom line is exactly right, it's all about the work ethic.

When I was about 20 I was on a waiting list for an operation, the hospital rang home randomly one day as there was a pull out** and if I was ready I could go straight in, the old man took the call and then rang my work but I had pulled a sickie. My boss drove around to my mates house to come see me, he said "Col, I don't know what the f***'s wrong with you but you need to ring your old man, there will be no need to answer to me as you're gonna get your arse kicked anyway once you see him, good luck".

I haven't had a sickie since unless I'm on my death bed.

That's a good boss, he knows your about to get a life lesson and doesn't need to get involved lol.

What I find to be the most important thing these days is making sure you get some form of a qualification. Whether that's a uni degree or a trade. You just need to make sure you are learning a skill that will help you.

I have also seen some traineeships that have also been successful.

Everything requires a ticket of some description nowadays, it's kept the doors open for the less academic, more hands on type of person.

That's not BComedy Jimmy, Boon hasn't updated his Sarcasm detector lately, ;)

It was one of the first lessons learned when I first joined this site. Thanks REB

Agreed, went and walked around it many years ago, could see myself with some cold cans watching a game there.

Yep it is, although Im now used to it, only get nervous now when he is driving in the country, snapchat is a very hand tool to keep an eye on them to ensure they have made their destination.

Luckily it was on TV so I recorded it and watched it a few times to remind me. TV coverage even includes me and locals dancing and hugging.

I rate my daughter being offered the role of Manager of Aboriginal Inclusion and Wellbeing at the Geelong Football Club.
Will miss her heaps as I've loved having her in my household but nice to know I'll have somewhere to stay in Geelong.
She will be working with all the players 3 days a week and the local community 2 days a week under the mentorship of Eddie Betts.

Even though it's not her speciality having done physio at uni for several years and working a couple of years as a physio it's an awesome extra feather in her cap which could take her to even more places she didn't expect.
I'm so envious as she will be based at Kardinia Park and regularly chat with Eddie and all the Geelong players, coaching staff and admin.
I am so bloody proud and amazed. A dream come true.

PS Hopefully a few side benefits for family too. ;)
