Should Australia Day date be changed?

How is it that something like discussing a date being changed, or Mundine saying he wont stand for the anthem can create such venomous attacks/discussion/hatred.. but yet things like legalising marijuana, increased interest rates, higher cost of living expenses, statewide power outages, murders, pedophile attacks etc etc all just go past everyone without a second look and very little discussing/interest?!

Because shame commonly mutates into anger.

Honestly, the media has so much to answer for, i really feel like they're trying to build this hatred and divide in this country.. they know removing a snippet of conversation from a controversial person, then manipulate it as a "breaking headline" and plaster it all over the place.

Seems to me they only ever publish articles that they know are going to cause friction - articles about outspoken athletes, misbehaviour from athletes, articles about minority groups and articles about religions such as Muslim.

What ever happened to just reporting the news? Like actual proper news?

I don't know what the answer is, but I agree with you. Blurring the line between what should be factual information on which people form opinion, with fictional storylines and imaginative editing designed to evoke an emotional response is doing great harm to our society IMO.

The onus is on the individual really. News.com has less credibility than the tiser at times and that says alot. The key is to get information from more than one source. Sure hitting up the age or Hsun are ok for some local stuff but if you really want to know more about whats happeneing overseas like in Syria for example, then do a it of research and you will find even on facebook pages and sites which are about this and out of the region.

Again its on the individual to do this and if you just want to watch sunrise and thats your news source well then thats on you.

The difference in the social media age is that there is no longer an accepted basis of "facts"

In the past both sides would read roughly the same news and then make their own conclusions. But in the social media age people typically follow pages that agree with their worldview and then the "facts" diverge so that people are no longer arguing about the same thing

This is why everyone should pay for a subscription to the news source of their choice, whether its lefty socialists at Fairfax, or the right wingers at Murdoch, or whoever. Like everything else on life, you pay for what you get. Quality journalism and criticism and analysis it brings doesn't come free. Unfortunately in the internet era we've become accustomed to free news, but this has clearly been shown as unsustainable, and if it continues to its logical conclusion the only news you'll get is from Facebook, or adverts disguised as news during a reality TV show.

Subscription services are also part of the problem unfortunately. I used to read quite a few articles from the Australian, as well as the guardian, abc and tiser.

Now what's left is the guardian which is mostly too left leaning for me (Stan and Grenville may laugh hearing that), and you only get the click bait from the tiser rather than the meaty articles.

Right wingers may disagree but I think this places more importance on the abc. Probably why the right have tried so hard to discredit it

I tend to research, more than be fed news from a single source.

Usually, if I have heard of something I find interesting, I'll google it, and find a link to the most local source. (e.g I'll read things from the Houston news if it happened in Houston, etc).

After reading the first article, I'll move on to another one about the same topic, to see how that compares. A lot of the time, the articles are completely different, so I make up my mind which one I agree with.

I also do this whenever I see something, or someone I find interesting. Actors, sports people, noteworthy people. I read a lot more than I watch TV. I know a lot of useless shit.
