If you are at the point of trading only to get out of the shit, the writing is on the wall.

Good operators know when they are on the edge.

Not sure of the legalities, but if the company does go bust they then become exempt of any liability to the customer, is that right? So if there was a scenario of someone signing a contract, and handing over say $250,000 for their house to be built and the company goes bust the following week, the customer then has a hard time getting what they paid for or getting their money back, right?
Centurion, you'd know all about this.

Builders are protected by a national insurance scheme for such events. If they go under then the insurer will find another builder to complete the work.

Gets messy as you need to work out what is left to do and how much is paid out.

Using progress payments, that are valuated by a independent third party, (designer / architect) would greatly help alleviate the risk of the customer losing large amounts of moolah.

Further more to that, if a builder is demanding up front payments run like the wind to the nearest Building law specialist and get out of the contract ASAP!

when Keith Bowden Electrical closed they took deposits on the Sunday and locked the doors on the Monday! How are they to know when its gone too far?

My mate put a deposit down for a turntable system that Sunday. Lost the money.

It should be like that for any demand for up front payments no matter the business.

A local gym here was taking one year memberships paid up front right up until the day before they shut their doors. It's a shit thing to do, there's no way you could not know it was coming if you ran the place.
It's all the SANFL's fault.

I lost $5000 in the late 1990s when a major appliance retailer in the Payneham area fell over after taking my money for a delivery "next week".
Theoretically. I owned an Ilve stove and a dishwasher but they were not there to be supplied.
I've gone pay after, or on the day of, delivery ever since, and only by card.

Frankly, there is nothing wrong with that roundabout.

The people rushing through it in the Ssangyong to get Sebastian to Prince Alfred on time, on the other hand....

Nothing wrong with rushing through it. Hitting it at pace is the best way to keep the traffic flowing.
