now, this may clash with some current posts in the shits thread, but ive become one of those dirty cyclists. after owning a bike now for 3 weeks, and being on it for a total of about an hour before today, i rode all the way to work this morning.

managed to make it, without any lycra, without any abuse or near misses from motorists, without any race tyres. only event was being chased by a duck along the torrens. is all of this "cyclist hate" blown out of proportion? most of the ride was along main roads and only the last section was along the torrens and completely separate from other vehicles. yet not a single time did i feel threatened or intimidated by the cars and trucks passing me. it was peak hour too, left home later than planned at 8.15. it must just be the lycra that sets them off.....

anyway, now to see how this helps my fitness. i can expect to lose ten or fifteen kilos after a ride like that right?? ;)

As with all things in life it only takes a couple of dickheads to ruin it for the majority.....congratulations on not being that dickhead or stumbling across one on 4 wheels!

The Torrens to Henley ride is very enjoyable.

I do think the lycra changes someone from being bike rider to a cyclist.

Last nights blackout. Was driving back from the Riverland and had no idea it was happening until I got to Adelaide and everything was eerily dark, no street lights, no traffic lights, nothing. Looked amazing

We take these things for granted.

That's probably what it would've looked like driving (or riding your horse and carriage) into Adelaide at night back the early part of last century.

"The night was still. The sky an inky black. There was not a sound, but for the local street cats, giving birth. I steered my steed through the empty cobblestone laneways between the squat cottages. I was on my way to a fair maidens abode, where I would compliment her on her milky white bossom, before I f**ked her"

I'm not much help I'm afraid - the only horse I rode prior to my owning an FJ Holden was Comic Court and I was only 9 years old, then, in 1952. ;)
(He'd won the Melbourne Cup in 1950.)

However, my father's Uncle Ted in Moonta got around in a pony and trap well into the 1970s.

When kidded about not getting a car he'd point out the pony could take him home from the pub regardless of his condition and if necessary even take them both into a nice warm stable he always left partly open for the purpose without disturbing his sleep. (I did go for the odd ride with him in that sometimes in the daytime before he'd been to the pub.)

By the way IIRC the street lights throughout Adelaide and the suburbs were turned off at 1am well into the 1950s - maybe even into the 1960s...
