As for the utes should they move to a control chassis like the supercars then that will certainly kill off most existing teams surely due to running costs, not cheap already- $125,000 to lease a team for a season

it could actually mean it being cheaper for the teams, have a controlled chasis and then it would allow them to source old v8 supercar engines.

sourcing old supercar donks would require new gearboxes (hollinger sequential or H pattern) add $20-30,000 for those alone not to mention upgraded brakes (6 piston front 4 piston rear) as per current supercar specs $8,000+, supercar rims to accommodate new brakes plus full racing slicks ( instead of the semi slicks they currently use) and the list goes on! Wouldn't think you'd get much change from $200,000

now that i've seen the price of the fpv gs ute there's no need for there to be any worry in the utes. I now know why they dropped the xr8 when you can buy the gs for $50,000.

if they did go to a old v8 supercar block they wouldn't need to change that much. wouldn't need to upgrade to the new brakes rims or tyres. brakes where only upgraded because they have gotten rid off the water cooling system, which resulted in new rims to fit the size of the breakes. I don't know why you would need to upgrade the tyres. If they did go to a supercar motor it would have to be detunned as it would kill the holden's. I actually think it would kill ute racing altogether, the utes have something special in them still being road driven utes, you change to more racing specific cars and there will be no difference between the utes and v8's

lol, give the fords access to the GS, and holdens access to the Maloo (or do holden still do a GPX or whatever it was called?), problem solved! 5.0 litre supercharged vs 6.2 litre naturally aspirated. might see the lap times tumble, or just a hell of a lot more wheel spin and sideways action!

i agree about the change taking the attraction away from the series. a big part of it for me is that they are pretty much the exact utes you can (or could) buy with minimal safety upgrades (i have a VE SSV myself). the suggestion i heard was that they were looking at changing it to future proof the series in case the commodore utes and falcon utes were no longer available (as is beginning to happen) and move it into a sort of third teir of the supercars, kinda like nascar have the main series, second teir and then the "trucks" as a third teir.

it would allow other makes to join in (maybe toyota with hilux, nissan with navara etc) and allow holden ford to stay in of they no longer had the utes they have now (go to colorado, ranger etc). it is all speculation though, and i am not sure on the reliability of the source of my info, so it may not happen at all. in a way i hope it doesnt, i love the series as it is, but i also dont want to see the series stop altogether. will be interesting to see where they go with it.

Would be very interesting to see a hilux or narvara going around a track in race trim!

Would be very interesting to see them navigate Adelaide, Gold Coast and Sydney tracks. Overtaking would be very scarce I would say.

Having said that, if they got it right and it was fast, aggresive racing, that would probably be a bigger draw card for me than the actual V8 Supercars.

they would go ok as long as they knocked several inches out of their ride heights!

The width of them would cause a bit of a problem through chicanes and stuff too wouldnt they? As in, two wide would be a big problem at most parts of the track.

hilux sr5 width 1760, navara 1850, holden ute width 1899, ford 1934, so they may be quite narrower!

Yeah I just checked the Falcon against the Ranger and the Rangers 1.8cm narrower.

Practice 3 (Symmons Plains): 2 non Holdens in top 14. I'd suggest the series is as weak as it's ever been... If Ford drop out altogether, as suggested in the weeks Auto Action, it might as well be a one make series. Formula Holden!

Not a lot you can do when you arrive at a corner, jump on the brake pedal and your foot goes to the floor and nothing happens

just aim the car and brace yourself! He is lucky that he got some air just before he hit the wall

hence the reason i stopped watching the sport, in late 90s the holdens were dominating everything, and it became boring, the poor form from the AU falcons made it that way. The VT/VX commodores were great. The BA made the improvement, but it seems the current falcons are not up to scratch, or the VF commodores are just streets ahead.

no, would have been a much more abrupt stop if he hit the wall directly head on

only practice means nothing wait till qualifying. Especially being a track they have never raced on there would be a lot of settings adjustment.

being on the ground reduces your speed at a greater rate due to sand traps etc.
