Got back from Bali a week ago, loved it. May become an annual trip for the next few years.

Finally going back to Bali after 10 years and not so fond memories of the Kuta area.
However this time will be to the seminyak area in an exclusive villa, a much different holiday planned.
what do people rate the seminyak and ubud areas, where we also plan to spend time.

Going off to Thailand next week for a fortnight long honeymoon. As I’ve never been overseas it’ll be something quite different for me.

Spending four nights in Chiang Mai and then splitting eight nights between Kata and Kamala Beaches. Have spent many hours reading up on various tours and attractions, so have a fairly good idea of what we’ll be doing.

Bit wary of a few of the animal based attractions, as watching exploited animals isn’t my idea of fun. Will certainly do the touristy things like Phi Phi and Phang Nga tours.

Hopefully I will survive the humidity (and the plentify amounts of cheap booze..)

Went to Phuket a few years back. The humidity was interesting, as was the rain at about 3-4pm every day. Lol
If you can avoid Patong as much as you can, it will make your stay more enjoyable. By all means, visit it, but don't go regularly, the businessfolk drive you up the wall.

Yeah, have heard many things about Patong. Had some friends just come back a honeymoon in Phuket and they quite enjoyed Patong at night, but I'm not sure how I will go. So yes, we deliberately choose to stay at beaches either side of it.

Chang Mai is great, you'll love it.

On the north-eastern stretch of Moon Mueang Rd are rows of street food vendors serving up 30 Baht pad thais and fruit smoothies that I smashed for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Try it, you won't be disappointed!

Whitewater rafting is a blast if you can get Class 4 rapids, anything less and it might be a bit ho-hum.

It's also worth hiring a couple of motorbikes and cruising up into the mountains for a gander at some cracking scenery.

I went to phuket and phi phi island late last year. alot of people get confused with with the 2 phi phi islands!!! one has hotels on it the other one is where the beach was filmed!!. Phi phi is alot more laid back during the day! but has a great party life at night. The only downside is that the all the DJs on the beach have to stop playing at 22/3ish!!

Just got back from a couple of weeks in Thailand. Had 4 nights at each of the following locations. Some thoughts/highlights for anybody interested:

Chiang Mai
- Loved the city. The people. The Food. The markets. The culture. The hospitality. Faultless Hotel. Banana pancakes and cheap cocktails!
- Doi Suthep mountain and temple, and the Royal Palace.
- Thailand's highest point Doi Inthanon (an hour south west) and the King/Queen Pagodas. Great Waterfalls and interesting hilltribe village.
- Elephant Nature Park- Home to about 35 elephants with most having various ailments from their working or trekking days (i.e broken hips, blindness). No riding or tricks. Great to interact with them, but also a depressing look at the life of domesticated elephants in Thailand.
- Wanted to give zip-lining through forest or rafting a shot, but wife wasn't keen and we ran out of days.

Kamala Beach (Phuket)
- Very quiet. Beach was very dirty. A bit underwhelming overall. Nearby Surin Beach similiar.
- Cost a fortune (by Thai standards anyway!) to get around using the taxi "mafia" and it rained a lot, so we spent most of our 4 days relaxing at the resort. Great views.

Kata Beach (Phuket)
- Great spot we thought. Busy enough but not over the top like Patong. (one visit was enough there)
- Especially liked Kata Noi beach. Strong rips at all beaches though which limited our swimming.
- Stayed in a brilliant villa.
- Did a tour around Phang Nga and a couple of other smaller, quiet islands.
- Rough seas resulted in our Phi Phi Island tour to be cancelled. Annoying but not much you can do.
- Cycled around Koh Yao Noi. Good scenery towards Krabi.
- “Tuk Tuk, Taxi?!”, “G’day mate, you need a suit” and “masssssaggge” over and over and over got a little tiresome.
- Prompthep Cape- not bad but overrated.

Great couple of weeks. With the exception of a couple of Phuket Cabbies, loved the Thai hospitality.

Hey Wedgie,
Can I ask the name of the place u stayed at at Kata Beach?

Kata Beach Spa and Resort, only 4 star but it's right on the beach with awesome views, Kata is a much nicer beach than Karon and Patong.
Only a $10 taxi fare to paying too.
I'll post some pics if you like.

I'm doing it 5 star this time and wanted to try some new spots but loved Kata.
Main reason we're not going back there is there weren't any family rooms available in the busy season.

If you want any more advice on where to stay, what to do, etc feel free to ask as besides being there I had to do extensive research to organize a trip there in he busy season at fairly short notice.

Thanks Wedgie booking for the Kata Beach Spa and Resort for next Feb. :D

You'll have a ball mate, hopefully it hasn't gone downhill in the 3 or 4 years I haven't been there but I'm sure the view will still be the same! :D

We did our research and looked at trip advisor and played off Travel Co's none of which were recommending it, but agreed their deal was better than their best! :D

Just come back from Bali, first time i have been in 11 years.
Expectations of Bali after last time was very low, however I was really surprised and had an awesome time. Maybe this has something to do with staying in a 5 star Villa and out of Kuta in Seminyak.
Travelled alot in Asia and i reckon the Balinese would have to be the friendliest i've come accross.
IMO bali is much better than Phuket, but Thailand has better beaches and will probably just win overall as a travel destination. Although the surf beaches in the Uluwatu area are some of the best i've seen.
Traffic is a huge problem in Bali, too much traffic something needs to be done. All i can think of is exclusion zones in the Kuta / legian / seminyak areas. Taxi's are dirt cheap tho.
Not the most beautiful place i've been, but awesome restaurants, bars, friendly locals and its bloody cheap! means I will return
Anyone been to Potato Head, awesome bar!!

Where you going? I've been to Thailand a few times, and the only thing I've taken is Malaria tablets as we headed into Laos.

They made me & the missus crook so we stopped 'em and just used a shit load of repellent.....

Probably no need for vaccinations if you're going for a run-of-the-mill holiday in Thailand. Maybe Hep A & B vaccinations at best.

Would be a different story if you were volunteering in a cholera-ridden remote village way up north for three months.

If worried about malaria, you can bring an emergency pack of Malarone, which you take if experiencing the symptoms, until you can get yourself to a hospital.
