PhilH's SA Summer Sports Rankings - Wed Nov 24

Postby PhilH » Wed Nov 24, 2010 10:35 pm

PHILH’S SA SUMMER SPORTS RANKINGS – MONDAY NOVEMBER 22ND 2010.
Something different to follow during the summer, here is my rankings of SA's 7 Summer Sports teams.

Ranking is based on performance during the season with maybe some lattitude allowed to take into account recent results.

Do you agree with the order?

1) ADELAIDE BITE (ABL - Baseball)
Last Weekend – Split road trip to Perth Heat with wins in the 2nd & 4th games
Standings – 6-2 record, 1st place
Upcoming – 4 game series at Norwood v Perth Heat
Comment – Bite are the only SA team atop a ladder at the moment albeit tied with the Sydney Blue Sox. Quirky scheduling to play Perth at home just days after the trip west and Thursday’s 11am game will hopefully work with school groups making up the numbers. At 1400+ pg Bite currently leads the ABL attendances with Melbourne yet to play at home.

2) ADELAIDE UNITED (A-League - Soccer)
Last Weekend – Beat Melbourne Heart 2-0 at AAMI Park. (That’s Melbourne’s AAMI not Adelaide’s)
Standings – 2nd behind Brisbane Road
Upcoming – Friday Night game at home v Gold Coast United (3rd)
Comments – Great to beat a Melbourne team in Melbourne even if it wasn’t those hated Victory. Still shaking my head at Dom RInaldo’s departure a man considered in most SA Media circles to be the best sports media manager in the state. Massive match v 3rd paced Gold Coast who will probably be shocked to play in front of a 10,000 crowd given the poor turn ups at home.

3) SOUTHERN SCORPIONS (Cricket Australia - Women)
Last Weekend – No games played, coming off a triple victory in Queensland Nov 13-14.
Standings – WNCL 1-1 , T20 3-1
Upcoming – Host cellar dwellers Tassie Roar this weekend in Adelaide, With T20 games Friday and Sunday and a WNCL game on Saturday all at Park 25.
Comment – Four wins from six games, all on the road, Redbacks take note!! Tassie are 7th (even below ACT) in both comps so a big chance for the Scorpions in their home opener to drive higher up the ladders.

4) ADELAIDE 36'ERS (NBL – Basketball)
Last Weekend – Lost both games in their North Queensland double.. 82-71 to Cairns Friday Night and 77-73 to Townsville on Sunday.
Standings – 2-5 (7th out of 9 clubs)
Upcoming – A week off to regroup, next up Townsville Crocs at the Done Fri Dec 3
Comment – 3 losses in a row have the 36’ers on the skids so the bye might have come at a good time.

5) SOUTHERN REDBACKS (Cricket Australia – Men)
Last Weekend – Lost Sheffield Shield game outright by 5 wickets to Queensland at Allan Border Field after claiming 1st innings points.
Standings – Last in both Sheffield Shield (only winless side after 3 games) and One Day ( 1-3 5pts) competitions.
Upcoming – Off to Hobart for a Sheffield Shield game Friday to Monday and a then they take on the top of the table Tigers in a one day game on Wednesday.
Comment – Is it T20 time yet?

6) ADELAIDE LIGHTNING (WNBL – Basketball)
Last Weekend - Lost to West Coast Fever 72-59 in Geraldton
Standings – 2nd last 1-6
Upcoming – Host Townsville at Wayville on Saturday Night
Comment – Not sure if the Lightning had ever lost to a WA based team until last Saturday Night. If they can’t put Fire out at home Saturday season would be gone.

Well so far we have

Ugl
- Bite losing 1st two at home to Perth Heat (with two more to come)
- Redbacks all out for 59 in Tassie and following on
- Lady Reds losing 4-0 to Melbourne Victory at home

Thankfully we do have some winners
- Adelaide United winning 2-1 with one of the seasons great goal assists.
- Southern Scorpions winning 1st of 3 games v Tassie Roar easily as below

Sportal

Neisha Iles A brilliant performance by South Australia with the ball and in the field has helped the Scorpions to a comfortable 80-run win over Tasmania in their Women's Twenty20 clash in Adelaide on Friday.

After posting 1-123 from their 20 overs thanks to 51 from Shelley Nitschke and an unbeaten 41 from Karen Rolton, the Scorpions had little trouble defending the total dismissing the Roar for just 43.
