Time question

Postby redandblack » Fri Oct 16, 2009 10:14 pm

I'm not a big soccer fan, although I enjoyed the Adelaide v Sydney game tonight, but I have a silly question.

Just about every game I watch has only one minute extra time in the first half, but at least three minutes in the second half.

Surely the occasional substitution doesn't count for it?

Why?

Here you go R & B;

Allowance is made in either period for all time lost through:
• substitutions
• assessment of injury to players
• removal of injured players from the field of play for treatment
• wasting time
• any other cause

The allowance for time lost is at the discretion of the referee.

So hence why their us usually more time in the second half as substitution etc happen.
The joy of being on the hill drinking beer cannot be understated

Thanks for that, but last night in the first half there was a sending off, an injury and the ball was kicked into the crowd a couple of times. All this allowed for only a minute.

Is it too cynical to suggest that 3 minutes at the end of the game adds to the tension? ;)

yeah and i think your missing that if manchester united are level or behind and the ref gives 4 minutes of added time it turns out to be 6 minutes so they can equalise or win, as DW said Fergie time

Oh you cynical little bunnies. If you really want to know how they calculate the added time all you have to do is ask Fergies close friend Alan Wiley. That's what Hughsie tried to do but he just couldn't squeeze in between them during thier added time lovefest at Old Trafford.

Not at all mate .. Ive been following football/soccer for a number of years now, and reckon I have a fair grasp on the game and it's rules etc, but this is one thing I've always been amazed at and never really received what seemed to be an answer that truly explains it.

Over the course of the season there are invariably games with some very long stoppages in the first half, yet the added time is nearly always less than that given in the 2nd half.

i think to stop the debate of how much time is added and how much was played would be alot easier if FIFA bring in a rule that states NO subs are allowed in added time after 90 minutes. We see so many subs during this time which we all know is only happening to eat up time
