CENTRAL Coast Mariners' striker Matthew Simon scored the first goal in the A-League opening match against Melbourne Victory at Etihad Stadium tonight.

After a goalmouth scramble, a flighted left-foot cross fell to Simon, who booted the ball in the roof of the net about nine minutes into the game.

The huge crowd erupted after Simon's first goal.

Soon afterwards, midfielder Michael McGlinchley goaled for the Mariners. McGlinchley's long shot from outside box deflected and sailed into the goal.
