At the weekend, 5 clubs were unable to field an U/14 team (1 third), 5 clubs were unable to field an U/15 team (1 third) and 3 clubs unable to field an U/18 team in their own right (1 fifth).

That is seriously broken.[/quote]

So why keep pushing the issue to have 5 sides play on a Saturday. I think we should be grateful that most clubs are even fielding junior sides. Let's be honest it's not just the SFL that is broken I'd say majority of metropolitan football in SA is broken. Time the SFL & SAAFL got together and nutted something out.

yeah but what you guys are failing to see is, what about all the clubs that have done a lot of hard work to get good numbers at their club, create a culture people stay at?? There are some clubs that would lose heaps of kids if we went to 4 sides. Why change for the weak?? Why not work HARD and work to get better? Instead we are prepared to throw our arms in the air and say F@#k it its too hard lets just take the easy option.

You don't trade in a Mercedes with a few scratches to get a KIA with a new paintjob.

Maybe these kids might find their way to nearby clubs struggling for numbers. They will be lost to the clubs eventually when there is no room in the Seniors for most of them. I'd say every club works hard to attract more juniors. There is enough kids playing in this league for most clubs to fill all grades except 18's which is obviously a bit thin on numbers. But most kids are at the bigger clubs with 2 or 3 sides per age group. And letting a club have 3 under 8's sides only increases the problem in the future.

The SFL is not the AFL with TV rights to worry about that need 18 teams!

Why don't we look to move on without the struggling clubs!

A league with 12 strong clubs is better than a league with 15 where 3 really struggle!

One of the most bizarre comments heard this year?

without the benefit of context, this is one of the most bizzare posts this year!

what or who isnt broken?!

The last word spoken b4 over riding the clubs of SFL.

Equally bizarre was the vote of a member of the board that had no mandate to do so as this member was not supported by the clubs twice during the AGM and was GIVEN a seat after a member left the SFL Board.

So we have someone clearly not supported by the clubs making a decision that over ruled the majority of the clubs!!!!!! [-X

In an ideal world this would happen, but there are already clubs with surplus junior players and ultimately they decide if they can't play with their mates, then they'd rather not play at all. We even have issues where a player can't play with his mates in the same team, but at the same club, they disappear from footy all togeteher. They will not drift over to Lonsdale or Hackham just to play footy as at the younger ages it's all about their mates and they don't have the confidence to walk into foreign territory and start all over again.

We pick up players from nearby clubs because their school mates change when they go to high school and they want to play with them and we also lose players on the same basis, but rarely do we ever lose players because they go to another club to get a game. Happens in seniors, but not in juniors.

How do you define struggling clubs?
- Clubs without a A grade finals appearance in over a decade? Aldinga and Hackham?
- Clubs that are not currently fielding all five Saturday sides independently? lonsdale, MVP, Noarlunga, Aldinga? marion, Edwardstown?
- Clubs that don't consistently field under 14's and under 16's on Saturdays? MVP, Edwardstown, Lonsdale, Marion.
- Clubs that don't consistently field under 14's and under 16's? Edwardstown, Marion, Lonsdale

Many ways to judge struggling clubs. Which one is it?

well there are 3 clubs listed in all of your categories so that says to.me they are really struggling. In my opinion if you cannot fill under 14s and 16s on a regular basis then you are gonna really struggle in the future

Well onto this week's games... A few very good contests in there with Flaggies v Morphett Vale, Towns vs Roos and Christies v Hackham.

Tips:
Brighton v Aldinga- Bombers by 120
Christies Beach v Hackham - Christies by 12
Cove v Happy Valley - Vikings by 45
Edwardstown v Morphettville Park - Roos by 8
Flagstaff v Morphett Vale - Emus by 21
Marion v Reynella - Wineflies by 150
Lonsdale v Noarlunga - Noarlunga by 170

Score differentials may not be as high if the conditions deteriorate, but there will still be some massive blowouts.
Goood luck to all this week.

Good chance for Flaggies to bounce back and show they are good enough with another key game, last week was not the Flaggies team that Ive seen play competitive footy all year. Look forward to a good day at the footy tomorrow.

I was surprised by their total lack of intensity. I expected we would win, but not by 70+ points. Will be interesting to see how they back up this week and if they are a genuine finals contender. I hope they are, would love to see a Flaggies/Valley final.

So what happens when one of those other 12 clubs struggles to fill a junior team, do you then ditch them as well?

The clubs listed above are along way behind the likes of Happy Valley, Brighton and Reynella in terms of juniors but they do tick some of the boxes and I'm sure those working behind the scenes at those clubs would love to fill a team in every grade. This is not a quick fix (as discussed few kids switch clubs under current SFL rules) the strength of clubs in junior grades now is based on the work put in 6-8 years ago.

Aldinga - no under 14's, but strong 16's, combined 18's
MVP - sunday 14's (undefeated), sunday 16's and 18's
Lonsdale - sunday 14's, sunday 16's, no 18's
Marion - sunday 14's, no 16's, under 18's
Edwardstown - under 14's in MSJFL, no 16's, under 18's.

Aldinga and Marion also have multiple mini's teams in under 8's and 10's.

but where would all the disposed clubs play?

also how does the SFL work in regards to having 15 teams? surely you cant play each other twice? that would be 30 rounds (including the bye)

A bit of a quirky fixture this weekend sees 12 Flaggy teams playing 12 Morphettvale teams this weekend, 5 Saturday teams and 7 Sunday teams, something you wont see in the Ammo's!

Final score was Flaggies 11-20-86 to MV 4-2-26. Flaggies kicked 1-12 in the last quarter. I spoke to the Flaggies team manager this morning and he has no idea why the result and details are not on the SFL site as they have ben inputted through Sporting Pulse and are in the system.
