Hit in the helmet twice once batting and once fielding.

Maybe I've missed something, but it seems as though players at bat-pad are ducking their heads rather than turning away. Is there a reason for this? I would have thought it would have been more dangerous.

probably if you duck you are still balanced and you may be able to keep an eye on it, wheras if you turn away you cant see it, i guess its similar to how they tell you to play bouncers imo.

Though when ur ducking your heads down so you can't really see the ball unless it pops up and you have time to lift the head which is different to batting coz when u duck your still side on and can view the ball

I'm not sure why they do it though maybe it's to with its quicker to duck than turn your whole body, the front of the helmet offers more protection with the head down than the back of the helmet or something

I would have thought it was the opposite? These blokes are taking their eye off the ball, dropping their heads straight down and getting hit on top of the head. Turning away it is actually easier to keep your eye on the ball. Perhaps it is something to do with getting hit on the temple or back of the neck like Phil Hughes?

Wouldn't turning away potentially expose the player to more serious harm e.g. hit in the kidneys, back of the ribs or spine etc?

I Dunno.

It would increase the amount of body exposed a bit, but wouldn't the head be the priority to protect in that position?

possibly both of these

may just be the techniques of the individual fielders

does anyone know whether they would get to the level of having specialist short leg fielding training? seems more like you put the new guys, they may not have fielded there for years in shield cricket

Do they really need to have a lunch break in this situation, surely the can skip lunch and start as soon as the pitch is ready to go

I reckon it would be hard to replicate at training because you would need the ball fizzing and the batsmen swing hard to replicate game day situation and get the best out of training yet that would be to risky for a player to be doing prior to a match.

They would do some kind of training, I remember hearing about Boon working with Simmo back in the day, but agree it would be a controlled practice. They would also have some basic pointers on what to do when you see a batsmen move forward or back.
This ducking into the ball just seems to be a trend I have notice over the last year or so.
