Watching some of the highlights this am, after falling asleep in the last session (yeah yeah, I know, now soft) but watching some of De Villiers 'keeping you get to appreciate how well he does the basics. Hand nice and low (hands still on the ground when the ball pitches in the Warner Lbw shout just after tea) so he comes up with it. Real nice catch off Duminey to get Doolan. Yeah he's a natural talented sportsman but still does the basic to make it look even easier. Surprising how international keepers still don't get the basics exactly right (Gilchrist was a prime example, Prior is now) by coming up slightly too early which in turn affects their ability to move.

Seriously, watching good 'keepers is almost as good as watching p0rn!!!

Another great days play for Australia! Loving this we're right on top. Spewing for Doolan! :( So close to a maiden test hundred, well batted. Dave Warner just keeps getting better!

Warner was dropped on 26,27 and 51 but at least he made em pay, took the game away in very short time.
Scoring rate over 4 an over which is why SA have trouble beating us as I'v said many times before. Thought their scoring rate might improve without Kallis.
Ouir unbeaten record in SA will continue, 44 years i think it is now

Graeme Smith has won the toss 20 times and bowled first. Won 15 Drawn 3 Lost 2 before this test.

Nice stats indeed
But why highlight that out for me ?
Did I post somewhere on this thread it was a bad decision to put Australia in ?

I did.
Still maintain it was a pissweak decision by Smith.

Perhaps he meant you , Jimbo
But he typed in Mal because of some obsessive compulsive infatuational habit he has to discredit me at any opportunity

Not at all mal. I thought it was an interesting stat.

Looking at this South African team and there are a lot of passengers!!!

Pieterson
Duminy
Peterson
Philander

The only reason this mob has been number 1 for so long is cause of Smith, Amla, De Villiers, Steyn and Kallis (when he played). Keep a couple of them quiet they have no depth to back them up.

De Kock surely is a no brainer for South Africa but they are usually very defensive and don't like to make changes so don't expect he will get a game!!!

Kidding about Philander
Hasnt had a great test but his record speaks for itself.
The other 3 are spuds though

Philander is the number 1 ranked bowler in the world at the moment! Can't believe you idiots are calling him a spud just because he hasn't bowled well in this test.

I do agree with your other statements. Their batting looks much weaker without kallis and they haven't had a good spinner in years

Sorry Sleepy misread this post
It is a stunning win/lose ratio
Its the John Laws of laws 'If your on a good thing stick to it'
He has been on a good thing with great results
There us some logic in Smith sending Australia in , looking at the past results

Both skippers Smith and Clarke have good fast bowlers , and being good teams , could take a punt in sending the opposition in

However, I'm of the opinion that you should always win the toss, bat first , unless there are exceptional circumstances
That's a policy that has stood the test of time with most captains most test matches
They get an advantage of sorts ,although most times the good sides still manage to win

The Clarke critics in this innings

The South Africans will give Clarke more chin deliveries b4 this series has finished
They have won round 1
How should Clarke play from here on ?
Should he play the same shot ?
Should he pull and hook at everything ?
Should he fend them off defensively?
Should he just duck and Weave ?
Should he sway back to the legside and slash through the offside [like Bradman v Larwood] ?
Should he use a tactic I have not posted ?

WHUFC you can post as well

Can anyone post what Clarke should do ?
Clarke was caught at fine leg playing a pull shot off SSsSsSsteyn

Put the shot away for the rest of the series.

SsSsSteyn bombarded Clarke in the last session with a series of short pitched stuff
It was bodylinesque with 2 fielders deep leg, leg slip, short leg
Clarke put the shot away and just avoided the short stuff
Did pull at one down legside, that went for 4 byes

So far your post has proven correct
Shows you have cricket nous, you should concentrate on that part of your posting

South Africa have always struggled with:

1. An opener to join Smith, Peterson/McKenzie/Rudolph all not up to it.
2. A spinner, Tahir is a spud, Peterson not much better, Paul Harris didn't get wickets but was rarely carted.
3. Lower order batsman, Rudolph/Duminy/Prince etc

Now with the retirement of Kallis they struggle with

1. Another middle order batsman
2. Second change seamer

I hope for their sake they have some good batsman coming through the ranks, De Cock must be a certainty for the next test.

De Villiers is a keeper. Sangakarra is a keeper. Maybe you should Google him. De Kock.

DeVilliers and Sangakarra were very good batters who took the gloves well into their career, both are still top 4-5 batters
De Kock is a genuine keeper is he not? Would he take the gloves and free up De Villiers to bat only
