Perfect start from Boult, immediate impact from him with a jaffer. As a left armer you got to love seeing that swing back into the right hander and knocking back middle stump.

Good ball, but not unplayable

Drive a truck between his bat and pad.
Disgusting shot

That's as poor a shot as Finch in Adelaide against India. He deserves a similar bollocking.

Southee stands taller with Boult at the other end as well.

Absolutely, they have been a class opening pair. Bit of swing for Southee too so this will be a good contest to watch.

Agree. Terrible from Burns but a tighter technique only has him out lbw instead.

Southee and de Grandhomme have bowled well, plenty of swing there plus some movement off the seam. The ball isn't really zipping through to Walting though.

I'd love to know why the Kiwis have square leg back when de Grandhomme is bowling to Labuschagne, it's just an ultra defensive field setting. I can understand have square leg back for Wagner bowling but for de Grandhomme v Labuschagne having square leg back plays into the batsman's hands all the time as it just easy runs for him.

Warner did alright in trying conditions, shame he didn’t get the chance to cash in. Kiwis so good in the field. Even though the Aussies haven’t been on top been a very enjoyable 1st session to watch. Always prefer cricket when the conditions are more bowler than batsman friendly.

Kane Williamson should have a new years resolution
Win the toss in test cricket and bat
Whatever advantage NZ had bowling , possibly gets negated because now Nathan Lyon most prob gets to bowl in the 4th innings

Having said that
Todays decision for NZ to bowl first was in my opinion, almost worth a gamble
Plenty of swing, 1-0 down in the series , seemed some logic in doing so

So far hats off to the groundsman, this pitch is a goodun. Was a little slow but is quickening up, moved around early and is still giving some assistance to the quickies, and the outfield is giving value for shots. The only unknown is if it's spinning, Santner has been shithouse so might have to wait for Williamson to have a go.

Has Wade always had this trouble with short balls?

Yep.
He can’t keep wearing them on the lid though, he has to develop a way to combat it

You'd think everything would be in proportion.

Shorter batsmen are generally better at playing the short delivery. Doesn't seem to be the case with Wade though.

Agreed, blokes like Gavaskar, Tendulkar, G.Kirsten, Border etc are prime examples. Remember watching Tom Moody have a shit time trying to fend off Rumesh Ratneyeke who wasn't exactly express.
