Not one University player commenced at University. They all came from other clubs, either in SA or interstate.

Under the old rules, players were forced to go and play at Uni if they were students. Now, under the grade rules, you can play anywhere you like. Therefore, they could hardly be accused of pinching young players anymore.

The players they sign are choosing to play at Uni, so there must be some attraction for them to change clubs. Perhaps they feel Uni offers them a better environment for developing their cricket?

I'm not so convinced about Chad Sayers at state level yet. He looks too one dimensional as a bowler at the moment IMHO. His 2nd XI level record is not that outstanding yet. One thing in his favour is that positive that from reports that Chad has improved his batting from a genuine no.10 or 11 to a solid middle order bat.

Zulu, I will accept that University are the same as the other clubs when they have two Under 14 and two Under 16 teams in the competition. Until they do, they are not on an equal footing with the other clubs.

It is something that Uni has looked at in the past I believe, but the SACA administration has knocked back their request to field junior sides.

Yes, the cricket administration in SA recognises that University is not a 'true' district cricket club. That said, I have nothing against Adelaide Uni. Just that there is one rule for 12 clubs and another for just one.

Rules not of Uni's making. They can only operate within the framework they are given.

Were you involved with West Torrens in the 1990's? Uni and the Eagles had some fabulous battles during that time, including finals. I will never forget making my A grade debut against WTCC out the back of Thebby Oval, with the brickworks across the road. How that area has changed!

Zulu, I sure was. Would have been the A Grade scorer in several of those seasons. I remember a number of 1 run or 1 wicket games. We were great rivals.

Then you would have had the privelege of scoring with Tom Palmer during that time. A true gentleman.

I dont think either Uni or the Eagles are the cause of the SACA's problems.

Zulu, I sure did have the honour of scoring with Tom on many occasions. I always remember his call after the fifth ball of many overs '... every probability a maiden'

That phrase of Tom's was more likely to sum up my batting than my bowling!

Why wouldn't Luke Williams get an extended run for the Redbacks next year? He always seems to be making runs at grade level.

Smithy, Pigeon (Peter George) could be, but I don't think he had quite a good season this year. One player who may push for a spot is Pigeon's opening partner, Aaron Zrim. Do not be surprised if Patrick Ochan or Jimmy Okello have big seasons next year too.

Maybe if the Plant doubles his early season form of this year they will give him a chance. 119 for the Chairmans 11, 175 in the second 11 and 125no for the Bays he'll get a chance. He did that this year for no cigar..... in the space of a few weeks, white hot form. The lad must wonder what he's got to do. And by the time they made changes unfortunately his form had slipped and Smith got the call up......FFS
Hi, My name is Ron 'Bluey' Dunn. Did you know I played in the 61 & 62 Tasman Premiership sides....

WCP, I don't think it was Smithy who got his spot but one of the Borgases. Smithy did not represent SA this season.

bulldogproud wrote:Stan, that is exactly the point that we are making though. Perth have more sides, even on a per capita basis allowing for their slightly higher population, yet are able to produce a good side. Therefore, it is not the number of sides in our district comp that is a problem. It is perhaps moreso that the selectors seem to turn a blind eye to performance in the Grade competition. Ryan Harris would have been in the side a lot earlier had they paid attention to it. Also, players like Tom Plant, Gary Putland, Wes Thomas and Luke Williams would have been given opportunities. Go back a few years and Brett Swain and Ben Hook would have been given more opportunities. Perhaps if the selectors paid more attention to form in the district comp...

I would hope that he is a big chance next season. We need some mature, experienced players up the order.
