Usually the treasurer would do that.

Guess who the Treasurer was…….

Errrr…that would be the President. How naive, albeit now we know, for the Gaza faithful to put their trust in him. The guy is a con and I hope he gets the 10 years he so richly deserves. He probably should end up in the slammer for what he’s done to the loyal people at that club.

No wonder the SANFL came down on him hard in the first instance.

And yes Bedge they need to receive all the sanctions, but a lot of really good and ‘naive’ people will also have to pay the penalty for someone who lied and refused to cooperate with SANFL. My gut feel is the club will get it all reduced to ensure the GOOD people of the club get to fight on and keep them alive.

Wasn't Willaston only one breach of which they pleaded guilty?

Hardly comparing apples with apples.

You're kidding yourself.

The penalty cant be disproportionate because you have the warm and fuzzys about the club. what you're effectively saying is "Hey the more you cheat, the more you get off".

Reality is they systematically broke the rules over a prolonged period of time - not just one or two years. Clubs like Willaston and Jervois copped their whack for their breaches and no one batted an eye lid, saw it as fair.. why coz it wasn't threatening to close the doors like Gaza? Also two clubs that fully complied with the SANFL.

Willaston:A summary of the penalties is as follows
$8,000 fine ($2k suspended)
Loss of 6 premiership points - 2 for 2018 and 4 for 2019.
Loss of three points under the Approved Player Points System (APPS) in both season 2019 and 2020
Two officials banned from holding position for 12 month.

Jervois: A summary of the penalties is as follows:
$26,500 fine ($9,500 of which is suspended)
Limited to a total of four points allocated under the Approved Player Points System (APPS) in both season 2024 and 2025
Loss of 8 premiership points in 2023 and 2024 (four points per year).

Not saying they shouldn't be punished. Just saying i dont think any club should receive a death sentence

Do you think members would have know it was going on. I'm the b grade coach at our club and honestly i wouldn't/dont have a single clue what any player is on. I dont need to know, i dont want to know, it wouldn't help my coaching performance knowing and its not a subject that gets spoken about by players etc.

People are elected into positions by these said members.. you can't claim ignorance as an excuse.

It's sad thinking a club may fold off the back of this - but if the penalties are not consistent, and people know they'll get away with softer punishment through the simple fact that comp wont want to see them fold - then what message does that send? If you're gonna break the rules, go hard because your penalty will be capped / reduced?

You don't think Jervois's penalties had the potential to have massive implications on their club?

If Gaza are receiving a death sentence, it's because they've earned it.. $300k in fines is huge.. but so is going that far over the cap in consecutive years.. if you got the money to break the law, you got the money to pay the fine..

I find a $300 000 fine an exercise in futility . There's no way they are paying that back.
They'd struggle to pay back $30 000 by the sounds.
SANFL would need to suspend $300 000 of it which is a joke.
The monetary penalty has to be smaller but on field bigger.
Zero points for 5 years and sent to the lowest grade possible.
President, treasurer to be banned from holding office for ever.
If SANFL want to get really serious criminal penalties for players and officials.

What crimes have they committed out of interest? Money in this instance hasn’t been stolen.

Falsely signing a statutory declaration would be a crime?

Only if they were sworn in accordance with the Oaths Act which I gather these may not have been.

I wonder if an attempt to swear a false stat dec is an offence.

See you say that, but if you think about it Australia wide there's a shitload of potential income not being assessed and taxed ....

From memory some of the Victorian League's have salary caps of $200k or thereabouts

Good point, but I would imagine the dollars Gaza were paying would be under that, as I know a few country clubs offering 5 hundred a game were tax free
