Good luck to both sides today. Might be a surprise to most, but Marion were one of the stronger sides going around in the late 1990's. Played in 4 (I think) Grand Finals when the SFL was at it's strongest, a two division competition with 18-20 clubs.

That said, who would buy Chicken Twisties when you can buy Cheese? It would be nice to see them climb the grades and the twistie rivarly will be renewed with Morphie Parks.

Marion I think can push higher over time. Now that Marion genuinely have a year by year hope I think this will give them good traction in years to come. This year they will probably play in the GF but Lonsdales ins are bloody good. My only issue is that a good portion of their KPP only have a few years in the tank at most- They are great footballers and even better blokes. Mind you being in their area it’s not hard to entice blokes from surrounding clubs in a strong league on the promise of a flag. Their recruitment area is prime. Remember it was 15 years ago that the SFL was the strongest league in SA outside Div 1 Ammos.

I’ll bring up my quote again here from the preseason. Both clubs will push higher than what is achieved today and this will also happen if other clubs come on board from the SFL.

The issue with the SFL is that clubs such as Aldinga, Hackham, Lonsdale and Marion are all clubs that given a glimmer of hope of immediate success will get the ball rolling very quickly and they are far bigger organisations than the traditional div 4-7 clubs in the SAAFL. In the SFL these clubs traditionally had to pay through the nose to make the 8- The issue from there is that they had no depth. Hackham got on a roll in the 90’s based on winning in div 2 SFL. The SFL took away this ability for a lot of clubs to get success and then go on to greater things from there. Echunga in the HFL is another example where having the 2nd div assisted a club. Starting from scratch in an already established area in the SFL from the bottom to consistently challenge the heavyweights is an enormous task.

Clubs like Flagstaff Hill are different as were Happy Valley prior. These were continually establishing areas which provided truckloads of juniors so they had a massive helping hand which is finished off with hard work.

Good luck to both clubs today. The last 3 years we have seen 5 clubs from the SFL come in to the SAAFL and all bar 1 have played in a GF. This is going to escalate very quickly I strongly suspect.

SFL are too far up themselves that they don't see that the clubs are happy to move to the SAAFL where success breeds success in the club in a happy environment.

So what all that dribble says is that those clubs from the SFL will eventually find their level?
