[emoji845]Breaking news - New Signing [emoji845]

The EBFC is super excited to be able to announce the signing of Patrick Barrett. Paddy comes to us from his home club being BDT in the Mallee Footy League. He is a two time mail medalist and has won numerous A Grade Premierships, also spending time at West Adelaide FC. He brings a truckload of experience and leadership to the group.

Will be interesting how the reigning Premiers shape up this season after less than ideal Trial performances.
The 1st against Hallet Cove resulted in about a 55 goal Win  that they would have gained nothing out of at all
Then followed up last Saturday getting thumped by Ramblers and held Goaless
With no more trials planned it could be a couple of hard weeks on the track before Round 1

Speaking with a few lads from Victor they said they accounted for Henley on the weekend. That would be strong form heading into round 1

Great little preview from Simmo on the Times website:

Great Southern football looks stronger in 2019 with big names signing on

The 2019 Great Southern Football League season starts on April 6 and clubs have been busy in the off season boosting their lists with the headline signings being AFL star Ryan Griffen, Brad Helbig, Simon Phillips and Xavier Gotch.

Langhorne Creek won the 2018 flag and coach Clint Godwin will be concerned the club does not suffer the dreaded premiership hangover. The Hawks have lost Lachlan Earl, Ben Warren and Ben McLeod, but have picked up Beau Walkom, Ryan Haylock, Dale Chandler, Phil Cleggett and hopeful of South Adelaide star Coby Helyar signing on.

McLaren were runner up in 2018 and were the Cinderella story of the competition and coach Gianni Petrucci has picked up Cody Ellison, Max Wakefield and Billy Gregory and lost speedster Oliver Dowling.

Mount Compass have been the benchmark in the competition for the past five years and look to be strong once again in 2019 under coach Peter Galbraith, who is in his eighth year at the helm.

The Dogs have lost Bernie Veide, Stuart Hill, Duane Schultz and Dale Ellis, but recruited Adam Hunter back to the club, Dwayne Ruddock, Shane Heatley and Steve Copestick.

Willunga have changed coaches with Steve Jaggard making way for prodigal son Mitch Portlock. The Demons look stronger in 2019 with the acquisitions of Scott Hunt, Daniel Lee, Nick Scanlon, Josh Dawson and Brett Miegel.

Encounter Bay will miss the ball winning ability of Ben Davis, Charlie Sharples and Rigby Barnes, but picked up some class with Patty Barrett, Tyler Baldock and Harry Toole. Coach Jed Wilson will also utilise the youth at the club which won the senior colts flag in 2018.

Victor Harbor will demand finals action in 2019 and Clint Alleway is the man to deliver it. The Roos have picked up Brock Schubert, Ben Yeomans, Jack Lang, Kurt Lindner, Jordan Bohnsack, James Bramley, Pat Conti, Ryan Jeffries and Jack Manning.

However, they have lost Doug Proud, Matt Beveridge, Matt Kreuger and Brad Borrillo.

Strathalbyn coach Todd Price will be excited with the return of Ben Simounds. The Roosters have also acquired Tom McNamara, Ethan Bell and Sam Luckett and lost Chris Clark, Sam George and Beau Walkom.

Myponga-Sellicks have a new coach in Wayne Deacon and picked up former Power listed player Simon Phillips, Tyler Harmon, Jack Fitzpatrick and Jordan Kennedy. The Mudlarks have lost the Merrett brothers, Josh Miller, Ty Allen and Scott Carpenter.

Yankalilla have outstanding inclusions for 2019 with South star Xavier Gotch, Chris Clark, Zac Edwards Joe Tyllis, Luke Durdin and Ben Pulbrook hopping on the list. Coach Joel Kay will have the Tigers surging up the ladder in 2019, although they have lost Luke Bartlett and Josh Barras.

Goolwa-Port Elliot has the biggest name return to the GSFL in Ryan Griffen and coach David Carnevale will enjoy having a stronger list in 2019. Brad Helbig, Matt Weise, Todd Marsh, Kyle Stoldt and Ryan Sutter join Griffen in gaining the club more wins this season and getting off the bottom.

This will hurt Compass, huge loss! One of, if not the best ruckman in the comp .......... in the 80s

Bit defeatist JJ?
Was surprised by the Creek loss, and McLaren and Compass are early favourites but it’s still early days. Obviously bays are still a reasonable side- yes they lost a few but the new recruits seem like quality.
Yank/pongy was hard to pick so the big margin surprised.....a combination of yanks improvement and pongy dropping off?

Anyway, great to have footy back!

I am on the Compass v Vale finishing top at the end of the minor round and also playing off in the BIG dance.
Below these two it will be congested but think Yank to finish 8th, G/PE 9th and Pongy 10th.

Do Compass rely heavily on recruits in A grade? Rest of their grades results are very poor.

Creeks will still be competitive but i feel will struggle to finish Top 3 which is where you need to be to have a crack at the Flag

Creeks were SMASHED in the 2nd and 3rd terms and the final 14 point margin was a little flattering imo.
Suffered a few key injuries as well which hindered them during the game and may well do for weeks to come

Ridiculous call McLaren ad Compass now. I reckon this year the comp will be as even as it’s ever been. McLaren didn’t beat Goolwa by as much as expected have they dropped off or Goolwa improved. Must admit Compass margin over Willunga surprised did they dominate??

Dutchy,
Yes, recruits ( most wouldn't know the Mt Compass post code) and Bartercard.

Understand that however Compass seems to have a huge gap between A grade and their other grades.

Last two seasons their reserves have finished the minor round in second. Played Willunga first round here who are arguably the yardstick for all grades outside of A, so cant read into these results too much yet

There are a number of other clubs in the league who struggle with their lower grades.

The GSFL is not immune to what has happened in other country footy leagues. We have seen in recent times the likes of Yank, Pongy, Compass and Creeks, struggle with junior numbers. Even Strath has struggled !!.

The townships of Willunga, McLarens, Goolwa, Victor and some what the Bays (although they clash with Victor for numbers) have the population base.

Correct me if im wrong but the Bays junior or senior colts team won a flag in 2018 with the assistance of juniors from Yank or Pongy. I apologise if this isnt correct.

The league is lucky it is geographically close to Adelaide otherwise clubs would fold / merge.

So yes .... clubs need recruits to bolster their team. Ive looked at the Compass list their core players are actually very good local footballers.

I am sure if u look over previous premeirship teams u would find the same has occured.
