Damian,

how do u work out the definition of 'pretenders' .... from my research the definition is as follows:

pre·tend·er (pr-tndr)
n.
1. One who simulates, pretends, or alleges falsely; a hypocrite or dissembler.
2. One who sets forth a claim, especially a claimant to a throne.

hmm... not sure if you are on the right track mate!

source; http://www.thefreedictionary.com/pretender

looking forward to your response !!

pretender
Noun
a person (or club) who makes a false or disputed claim to a throne or title

From the same site as yours. The league in 2009, as i see it, is a 3 horse race. Creeks and Strath as it has been the last few years are the only two teams i can see challenging Willunga for the premiership. Compass think they are a chance, hence why they are 'pretending' because honestly, they are not. (i'll happily eat my words if they prove me wrong on September 19!)

You can say that Compass have had success in recent years, true to a degree but i would use 'have improved' in recent years. True success comes with winning that last game of the year. Just my thoughts :)

Damian I'm not disputing your thoughts, as that's what these sites are all about people submitting their thoughts etc. I may have missed some posts on here mate, but I can't recall reading anywhere that anyone mentioned MCFC as a true contender or the rightful holder of the throne. (The old eyes aren't what they used to be   !) If they have, well, they are silly. To blow one's own bags isn't a sensible thing to do, even if you've won the flag the previous year!! Take the great BJ Ernest, he'll always deflate his club's tyres so to speak rather than pump them up when talking about winning premierships! I think, well I'd say that all supporters of the GSFL would definitely put Willunga and Langhorne Creek as one and two .... no disputing that!

Your eyes are working fine BB, nothing mentioned on here that i know off stating Compass as a chance, but a few of the lads are talking up their chances of the forum, which is all well and good, but hence why the 'pretenders' term was used. Good luck to them. BJ is a smart man! :D

my brother plays for an adelaide amatuer club and speaking to him last night he said they have been in contact with 5 or 6 players from creeks who acctually live in langhorne creek but are now spitting it about these new recruits taking the cash$$. These are blokes in their early 20's who play good footy but do it and enjoy it with there mates. Apparantley these blokes are still training with the creeks but keeping it hush until they get a good offer and are very keen to move on. This once again proves a point and it happened at the bays two years ago when bassani first took the reins, he got the job and with him came 8 or 9 blokes, these 8 or 9 blokes, got good coin, most of them didnt stick around after the game and didnt train except for heuskes and JB and although the team looked good on paper, it didnt jell and most of the local blokes tossed it in because they knew most of the recruits besides the two mentioned above were in it for the coin and not the team.

its sounds good to buy a premiership but can be harmfull in the long run, i think credit has to go to willunga, if they did splash the cash atleast most of the blokes have stuck around and are good team men. Think the club has adopted a culture which most clubs would love to have.

A good comment Cuzzy.
It is a hard balancing act to get the right mix of recruits and $$$paid as well as showing respect to the true blue and loyal locals who are the heart and soul of a club.

We're talking about 4 or 5 recruits not 8 or 9.. please don't insult Langhorne Creek by comparing them to Encounter Bay during the Bassani era.
In regards to locals "spitting it" because we've got some talented recruits (and very good blokes as well I might add) coming to the club you couldn't be further from the mark. It's actually much the opposite to what you've claimed. In years gone by, many of the locals have been reluctant to come out to preseason until mid March and so far this year they've been out in their droves because they are excited about being part of LCFC in 2009.

limb, i am stating what i have been told, and as much as you would like to sit back and think its all happy boys at the creeks this year, as i said these blokes are training and are keeping very hush, put yourself in their shoes if you were shopping around you would be keeping your fitness up and also keeping it very hush. its okay mate i am sure feast or sherwood can make up for 5 or 6 blokes on the park. Next monday might even have a few names for ya. Does the amatuer league have a points system?

I wasn't having a go at u, it just doesn't add up with what we've been seeing on the track. I'd be surprised if there were any players that were looking further afield with such a exciting season for the club ahead of us. Time will tell. I'd be interested to hear what amateur league team your brother plays for. PM me if you'd rather keep it on the down low.

the old creek winery (i mean footy club) must be doing very very very well, with the amount of cash. Pressure is on, anything but a preimership this year with the names the creek have signed would be a complete failure. And unless these blokes $$$ stay on next year a 1 year wonder

Limb
It will be good to see a little pressure put on Willunga. It might just open up a few cracks in their armory for us other teams to have a go at.
What round do you play them first?
If it is early in the season when we have a night game it would be worth going to watch.
One thing Langhornes have done over the last 25 years is just keep on having a go. They are never beaten and very hard at it all day every week.

The wine industry is going down the gurglar, I hope the FC hasn't outliayed more money than what is going to come in over the next 6 months!!!

While playing at Yank, he played for the scooners and a pair of thongs. Always barefoot when picking him up of the Boat. Ahh the good old days back when footy was tribal and the tigers were winning.

would have been on an a grade team sheet still, I noticed today that Perrin Hicks and Matty Radbone were still under the 225 A grade games, but still got their league life membership at end of last season. Also looks as though the last minor round hasn't been added on either, minor details I know and I'm sure the powers that be will get it sorted before the start of 2009 season.

absolutely Jingles, and well done to them too :-bd , just spare a thought for someone like Damien Willis, who played junior football against the likes of Tim and Randall Follett. Played A grade for a few years, and then went to KI to play for a couple of years. He returned to GSFL and his records before that were either lost, wiped or just forgotten about. He would have life membership for sure by now if it were kept track of properly. I know it's not a big issue, just a gripe of mine that such a great bloke and player will finish his career pretty well un-noticed by the league

I understand that both the SFL and the GSFL are and have always been keen to reinstate the Lovelock Shield.
The sticking point is the Hills League, and the junior aspect of the comp where the SFL dominated for a fair while.
