Not good enough for Div 1

...?

Echunga getting relegated to Div 2 because their B-Grade were not very strong

Hang on, I have just had a look at the HFL by-laws. I cannot see anything in the rules differentiating Minor Round and Finals matches:

18.2.3 Promotion and Relegation Points System:
The following points rating system shall be applied to all Central Division Clubs so as to confirm the Central Division Club to be relegated as per the HFL Promotion and Relegation as referred in Rule 18.2.2.
 A Grade win: 10 points
 B Grade win: 5 points
 Senior Colts win: 5 points
 Junior Colts win: 3 points
 Drawn game: ½ points to each team (Points to be shared equally)
 Forfeited game: Full points awarded to the team receiving the forfeit.
 Abandoned game: Referred to the HFL Board of Directors.

Taking into account the two weeks of finals now having been played, the points now look like this:

Blackwood 303
Mount Barker 285
Uraidla Districts 263
Lobethal 212
Ironbank 211
Onkaparinga Valley 209
Hahndorf 207
Echunga 162
Torrens Valley 156
Bridgewater 154

It looks like Bridgewater may go down instead according to the rules, could easily be challenged otherwise. Echunga's win yesterday may have been worth a lot more than just a Prelim Final berth.

could you post the rule 18.2.2?
Im sure that there will be something stating that the points allocation is only for minor round games somewhere in there.

That may be the intent and the understanding of many people but if it isn't actually written in the by-laws then LGIL has a very good point.

This could get very interesting, and well worth persuing for Echunga during the off season

Look if Echunga can stay in Central and continue to build their other grades they can only be a good thing central, good people, good facilities.

18.2.2 Relegation to Country Division:
If the nomination of a Country Division Club for promotion to Central Division meets all criteria the following shall be applied in determining the Central Division Club that will be relegated:
18.2.2.1 A Central Division Club may nominate to be relegated to Country Division and if successful shall be relegated in the next season.
18.2.2.2 If no Central Division Club nominates for relegation, the Board of Directors of the HFL shall apply the promotion and relegation points system as referred in Rule 18.2.3, to all Central Division Clubs.
18.2.2.3 The Central Division Club with the lowest points shall be relegated to Country Division in the next season.
Last Amended February 2013 28
18.2.2.4 If two clubs finish on equal lowest points in Central Division, the percentage of all four (4) teams (ie: A grade, B Grade, S/C and J/C) of each Club shall be added and the Club finishing with the lowest percentage shall be relegated to Country Division.

By the way the rule is worded, Echunga have secured their spot in Central for 2015.

Nice work LGIL, hope some Echunga hierachy are reading this. It will make for another interesting off season (there is no such thing for club committes or board members). Looks like another AGM I'll be attending.

Also Torrens Valley's B grade win in the elimination final last week has saved them relegation.

Definitely aware of the current situation with Bridgewater now being in the gun for relegation.

There should be a complete restructure IMO as it will kill all the hard work Bridgey has done with its juniors.

Well aware though that this simple scenario of the clause being worded loosely - thus meaning that all Central matches count regardless of distinction between minor and major rounds must count - does not mean the HFL will allow this to happen.

But as everyone has continually conveyed - rules are rules and we all knew this coming into 2014.

Lets see how this one is handled at both club and governing body level.

Will be an interesting period to come!

My tip is it will turn into yet another farce... the HFL seem to very good at making the seemingly simple, extremely complicated!

The HFL are no orphan there.

It seems all football leagues implement rules without proper analysis of the potential scenarios that may occur.

* AFL providing more valuable draft picks for poor performance, resulting in clubs actively seeking lower positions on the table to recruit better talent.
* SANFL implementing a points system to reduce the number of players that can be recruited to a community club in one year, results in increased payments to the players being recruited to those clubs through the toxic combination of more competition to recruit the same players and the annual club budgets being spent on fewer players (ie increase demand, reduce supply, maintain budget = increased price)
* Increased focus on head-high contact results in players actively seeking high contact, resulting in more head injuries.
* Removing smothering, spoiling, tackling, shepherding from junior football is discouraging young players who are not natural ball winners from playing the game (emphasis is about how many possessions rather than quality or beating your opponent). This will result in a lack of quality defensive players in the future as those players would have previously been developed into defenders or taggers and the like.

It's in their rules, they cannot change the rules and make it apply retrospectively. Echunga could challenge that in court if necessary.

And because of the increased price it attracts much better quality players further weakening the SANFL

Clutching at straws??
All clubs know it's only the minor rounds that count. Or do you also want to hand out the club shield based on finals results as well?

Club shield is different to relegation points. U13's don't count for a start & no-one really gives a shit about it (the club shield that is) coz you don't get any prize for winning it. Almost as useless as the courier cup.

I have never heard so much crap in regards to relegation in all my life. Why don't you blokes get a life. I told you 6 weeks ago there will be an 11 team central division next season with major changes in 2016. Lofty will come up no-one will go down and there will be an 8 team country division. Was always gonna be after last years fiasco. Nairne aren't ready to come up next season and amalgamation of some clubs will take place in 12 months time.
Lets talk more about finals now and forget all this by law crap. Odds on Uraidla for the flag now - clearly 6-7 goals better than anyone - as they where at the start of the year.

By the wording of the rule - finals also count towards the rule.18.2.3 Promotion and Relegation Points System:(which is different to the club shield)
E.G.The following points rating system shall be applied to all Central Division Clubs so as to confirm the Central Division Club to be relegated as per the HFL Promotion and Relegation as referred in Rule 18.2.2.
 A Grade win: 10 points
 B Grade win: 5 points
 Senior Colts win: 5 points
 Junior Colts win: 3 points
 Drawn game: ½ points to each team (Points to be shared equally)
 Forfeited game: Full points awarded to the team receiving the forfeit.
 Abandoned game: Referred to the HFL Board of Directors.

If the delineation between minor and major rounds applies can someone please direct me to this?
Per the HFL laws wording there is no distinction - thus all games played within a season ( which commences from the first minor round match and concludes with the grand final ) must apply.

My only conclusion is that they didn't think this one out and didn't expect this scenario to arise when writing the laws..
It really is a unique situation that has occurred though.

And my money is on Uraidla topping off a good year with another flag and a total restructure of the comp in 2015.
