Not sure what the issue is here. They are replacing redundant technology, the cost will be fully recovered and it will improve security. Am I missing something?

Improve security??? What a load of rubbish.....the tax payer (you and I) are paying for rapists, murderer's and child abusers to have the flat screen digital TV's..

While we are at it...throw in a playstation, HD recorder and a surround sound system.

It's a joke.

It's an emotive argument, but not a rational one. What % of the population at those particular prisons are made up of murderers, rapists and child abusers? Violent crime only makes up fraction of the population, most are doing time for property crimes and drug offences.

Which means that most prisoners go in and come out at some stage. Going to prison itself is a dehumanising experience, regardless of what 'luxuries' you think they might have. It is in the best interests of society to minimise the dehumanisation of prisoners because they will re-enter society at some point. Do you really want prisoners going in and coming out completely disconnected from society? "You go to prison as punishment, not for punishment".

If you're interested in learning more regarding the philosophy of incarceration I can suggest reading Foucault's Discipline and Punish: The Birth of the Prison.

Would rather see the money spent of Keith Hospital.

If they want TV's let the prisoners buy them....

They're renting them. The Government is providing the initial outlay. If they want to watch TV let them buy one, so there doesn't need to be an outlay by the Government.

Fair enough. Given that the aim is for the cost to be fully recovered, then technically that outlay will still be available.

Seems like a fitting thread for this, "Herald Sun reveals prisoners fed a “smorgasbord of delicacies” – $2.42 meals":

An outrageously misleading piece of garbage “reporting” from the hacks at the Herald Sun this morning:

A VICTIMS support group says it’s disgusting that Victoria’s worst criminals are feasting on gourmet delights including duck, prawns, rib-eye steaks and sushi.

The Herald Sun has learned murderous fiends including Peter Dupas, cop killer Bandali Debs, CBD killer Christopher Wayne Hudson and rapist John Xydias are chowing down on a smorgasbord of delicacies.

Roast turkey, porterhouse steak, prawn cutlets and smoked salmon also feature on a delectable list of items served up to inmates at Barwon Prison.

In documents obtained by the Herald Sun under Freedom of Information laws, the State Government revealed inmates gorge on mountains of cheese, delicious pastries and fresh fruit.

I agree with making them eat Sushi - it is an appropriate punishment! ;)
TV? Does that mean they get one each or is that for a number needed to be shared in a common lounge?
I guess it may save money to rent them one each, as it would cost more to have enough staff on duty to break up fights over which channel to watch.

A $600 TV doesn't magically offset not having your freedom. In fact, they have TVs now anyway that have become redundant since analog was switched off. So you either pay for set top boxes and someone to come in and install them all or you buy new ones. If TVs in prison cells are a huge issue why weren't we onto it in such an emotional way before with the TVs they had then.

I have never been in prison. I am sure a lot of a reactionaries to this story have never been in prison either. I am also sure prison, even with a flat screen TV, would rate 0.1 of one star on the accomodation rating scheme with the added bonus that you can't go anywhere outside the prison. I have no problem if it is only 0.1 of one star as they are there as punishment. If you live in a tin shed and have a TV you still live in a tin shed.
In between signatures .....
