So whats our thoughts on the cuts in the Public Service?

I think despite what the media are dramatizing they will have no problem at all finding the voluntary redundancies. Few are keen from my office already.

I think the cuts to long service leave are pretty disgusting

and im gonna go on a limb here and back the fact i will get 2 extra days annual leave instead of the 17.5 loading on top of my existing 20 days. To me the extra dollars doesnt compete with 2 extra days i could use around a long weekend somewhere for an extra break.

Im happy to pay my PSA membership and support them. But strong measures needed to be made. I would only really support getting our long service leave back but the rest as far as i can see im OK with.....

Incredible that the ALP has basically brought in at a state level what they fought against so hard at a Federal level (decreased leave entitlements). At least MP's super has increased, thats something we can all feel relieved about Seriously who voted for these clowns, how could the SA public be sucked in like they were!

As a public servant I am sure they will achieve their reduction goals IF those that apply for the package are given it ----- not as in the past where most who put up their hand were rejected as still required --- it should be a separation package not a targeted separation package. The treasurer should insist of a list of all who apply and ensure the number is reached without sacking by approving those who apply.

PLEASE -- Lets not talk about pigs in the trough or the large number of ministerial staffers/median advisers or the stupid suggestion to reduce Ministers or (horror) reduction to the stinkers in residence program

Treasurer just might have a problem in that several things that he wants to change are in a legal & I believe binding document called enterprise bargaining that still has 3 years to run --- OOOOOOH isn't life fun

It wont affect my job - but the million dollar funding cut to public libraries is a stinker.

Basically that's a million dollars of books/material that the public will not be receiving next financial year. I also have a sneaking suspicion they will do it again every year for the next 4 or 5 years in an effort to avoid public outcry.

Just another example of cost shifting to Local Government. Wonder why your rates keep going up? Ask the State Government.

I'm concerned about the impost on the cost of driving.
I don't object to the fine levels for being substantially over the speed limit, but I think the first level, which is easy to stray into accidentally and briefly, is a bit steep.
Perhaps it is the setting of the brackets themselves that is the issue - it appeared the first was "up to 15Kph over".
Maybe the first, and less expensive, level should be "up to 10Kph over", as more than 10Kph over would rarely be unintentional.

2 days on top of 20 is only 10%, I'd rather the 17.5%

What happens if you've got plenty of leave saved up? You lose the 17.5% on all of that but don't get any extra days for those savings, only future days. Seems a rip off.

Need more info before i decide, but i'm leaning to NO!

WITH the changes in charges of speeding fines and licenses which will enable the state to be out of debt in the near future I imagine that when the state is out of debt these charges will reduce back to what they are now.

At nearly 55 I was thinking of leaving anyway, I'll be applying for a package ASAP This will decimate our unit a large number of experienced people will be out the door and there has been no succession planning to cover the losses. When I Started with thew State Govt. I asked an older colleague why we got the 17% leave loading.
He replied that one year when they were looking at pay rises it was decided that instead of dividing the annual value of the pay rise by 26 pay periods and get a little bit each week it would be payed as the Leave Loading we now enjoy when we go on leave

In effect, by removing the loading the Government is taking away a pay rise given many years ago...........how many private sector employees would do that?

Most SA public servants accept a lower pay rate to that of their Federal equivalents, and I know in my job, a considerably lower pay rate than the trade in the private sector that is the prerequisite to even applying for my position. The trade off for that is job security and a couple of entitlements such as leave loading and our current LSL.

A colleague of mine who has only worked in the public sector for a short time yesterday said "I'd be better off going back to private, better pay, put up with less crap from above and customers, don't have to be away from home and family a week at a time (for which the only benefit is meals and accommodation payed and has cost a number of marriages in the time I've been there) and I have to work just as hard here as I did in private, why put up with all of that and get nothing in return"


I told my wife that I'd be a fool not to at least consider a package if it becomes available, wish I was 56 instead of 46, a quick calculation last night, $130K + taxed at 15% plus 8 months worth of LSL and 5 weeks annual leave.........that would see me debt free and a considerable sum in the bank

Unless the Govt reneges on it's "no privatisation" policy I don't think I will get the opportunity as someone still has to do our job

There is a bit of dead wood that could be gone from some admin roles but someone still has to do the operational tasks, if it is not us we will pay contractors a lot more to do it for us, but that wouldn't matter because they are not a public servant!

I think it has been said before by an ALP leader: "We are the government, and we can change the law."
It is a bit like Don Dunstan defending spending the state superannuation funds in the 1970s: "Yes we have used the funds, but we are the government and we'll replace them when necessary."
I bet John Bannon loved that when he couldn't "replace them" in the late 1980s.
