I'd be interested in the figures over a longer period, if anyone has access, to see if there is a pattern of fluctuations, as looking at an apparent correlation over a very short period doesn't prove much.
Between the late 1980s and 1992 I worked almost exclusively in SA as a WorkCover specialist and got a lot of referrals initiated by the unions.
I got the impression there was a surge in death rates in several industries during that time, but particularly in construction.
Unfortunately, I can't recall precisely when it was in that period..

The report suggests welfare payments should be quarantined only in cases of proven abuse or neglect - or if people choose to voluntarily "opt-in''.

The federal government is taking the opposite approach.

It's planning to extend income management to all disadvantaged areas of the Northern Territory and, eventually, Australia."

The "doctors' association" reference intrigues me.
There has been nothing about it in the mainstream medical literature lately.
So, the only "doctors' association" I can think of that might have made a comment would be the radical left "Doctors' Reform Society" known in the profession as the "Labor Doctors' Club".
Last time I checked, about 4 years ago, all its 30 odd member were also members of the ALP.
They are in the press a lot, spreading their propaganda, and pretending they are representative of the profession as a whole.

They're all communists I can feel it in my bones! Hang on I thought "ALP front groups" would be reluctant to come out and criticise the Labor government and ALP policy? Which proves they're doctors with morals and ethics so a hat tip to them for having the balls to do so.
