Then there is this one: https://theconversation.com/note-to-mar ... ally-78665

“Reading the Bible to determine the shape of contemporary marriage is not an easy task. It is an ancient collection of 66 books, written in three different languages (Hebrew, Greek and Aramaic), and spanning over 1,000 years of human history.

Much of the Bible was written 2,500 years ago, when family life was very different.
In the Hebrew scriptures, Abraham fathered children with his concubine as well as his wife, and Moses likely had two wives (one of whom is presented as problematic because she was a foreigner). Famous biblical kings, like David and Solomon, had entire palaces full of often dubiously acquired wives and concubines who served as symbols of their power and status.

The reality is families in the Bible reflect the patriarchal structures of their period. Women were considered commodities to be married off for political alliances, economic reasons, or to keep families connected. They had no autonomy to choose their partners.
Polygamy was common, as was the use of slaves as sexual concubines. I don’t hear anyone advocating a “biblical view” of marriage suggesting we return to those particular scenarios.”

Turns out the no vote is useful after all

Has a very awkward conversation with my grandmother tonight. She came around to give us free tickets to some Beatles cover band thing this weekend - that she won because she rang up 5AA and said she is "sick of being bullied by minority groups"

I feel quite ashamed that I didn't take her to task on the ridiculousness of those comments and took the tickets.

Should be a good show though. I think Kevin Mitchell is the singer

Be interesting to see, comparatively, how long these people have been "bullied" as opposed to how long homosexuals have been actually bullied.

Did you marry a woman?

Yes. And...

I think some people just don't like getting challenged on their long held beliefs. Particularly older people. Maybe it should happen more often.

So your grandmother came over to give you something for free and you dont agree with her opinion so you think should have taken her to task.

Your clearly a winner as a grandson. Even if you dont agree with her that would of been poor.

You should also give back the tickets.

Stan, I'm pretty certain the "ashamed" bit was tongue in cheek.
Pretty close family, from what I can gather.

Thanks for all having an opinion on my conversation with my grandma Haha.

The ashamed bit was slightly tongue in cheek but I do feel like I should at least let her know I have a different opinion, even though I wouldn't start a discussion about it. Silence is probably treated as agreement. Similar things happen with older members of my family and casual racism, and my default is to ignore it or change the subject but at least saying I have a different opinion before changing then subject might be a better option

I looked up the prices though - $130 per ticket for a Beatles cover show!

Let's hope she doesn't get abused and beaten up at church by yes demonstrators
You'll have a real dilemma to deal with then

So you'll get on here and talk shit, tell us how wrong it is, yadda yadda, but wont talk to your family about it?

Maybe try to change opinions, instead of talking negatively about people who feel the same as your lovely grandmother.

Like I was saying, people have things instilled in them, believe it for decades and now you expect them to forget all that and change from seeing ads on the tv?

Pretty gutless to not speak up and engage in an actual conversation. Enjoy the show though.

This forum and posts are exactly why this process is a disgrace !

We elect politicians to make decisions in this country and this so called survey ,vote , is an example of a government with no spine split between extreme religious nuts .

Accepting tickets to a Beatles show when having a differing opinion to your grandma on same sex marriage is nothing to be concerned about. I can't believe you are getting attacked on here because of it.

Let the people who want to vote no, vote no.
Let the people who want to vote yes, vote yes.

At the end of the day, Malcolm, even with a 'yes' result probably won't get it through his party full of conservatives anyway.

http://thenewdaily.com.au/news/national/2017/09/12/same-sex-marriage-support-poll/

Support for same-sex marriage remains at 70 per cent according to a newly released poll as forms for the survey are posted out across the country.

A new Fairfax/Ipsos poll found 65 per cent of people were “certain” to complete the postal survey, and of those seven out of 10 will tick “yes” in favour of marriage equality.

Some 1400 voters were surveyed between Wednesday and Saturday last week for the poll.

A Fairfax/Ipsos poll a year ago found 70 per cent support for same-sex marriage.

i overheard a convo at work the other day between some older blokes in the work shop, they will be voting no... Because apparently the children will be in trouble and than people will be able to marry animals next
Didn't get involved due to their argument being totally ridiculous... They didn't mention how it would directly affect them, but no one on the opposing side has said how it will

Now it's going to be a postal vote that won't count.

I was gonna ask whether you had spoken to your family and friends about it but it's pretty clearly you ldon't speak to them or anyone in real life.
