Ventured down to Preston Oval on Saturday (By hell it was cold) to have a look at Box Hill playing Preston Bullants.

Preston jumped out to a 4 goal lead, over a very lethargic Box Hill side. Not sure how many magnets were moved at quarter time, but it was a revved up Box Hill in the second quarter. Banging through 8 or 9 goals. The quarter went for 35 minutes. Extraordinary.

We were sitting in the grandstand, among the scouts from rival clubs. 2 from Gold Coast on my right, and a couple from the Dockers behind me.... along with the umps observer etc.

Went down at half time to get Mrs C a coffee, and a beer for myself. Standing in the coffee line was a bloke who really. really looked like Jack Ginnivan. Because it was. A little taller than he looks on TV, and has an acne condition! Wandered why he was at the game. Spoke to a mate who said he was probably there to watch his mate, ex Pie Callum Brown, who was playing (and very well) for Box Hill. Old man Gavin was seated just to our left. I hadn't noticed him, til my mate pointed him out.

In the end a fairly convincing win for Box Hill. Max Ramsden probably best for BH.

Still thawing out today.

St Kilda and Sandringham to field their own teams in 2026, ending a long running affiliation. 22 teams in the VFL next season.

Think that leaves Melbourne/Casey and Hawthorn/Box Hill as the final two.

Ventured into Arden Street Saturday for the Box Hill Vs North Melb VFL game.

Was expecting to get hit up for $10 entry fee at the gate. There was no gate, just walk in.

Bugger all facilities. No food or drink, other than a coffee van, and a burger/chips van. The North "clubrooms" as such not open. For a mob who could do with a bit of coin.... they missed the oppo to sell me 3 or 4 beers.

The club merc shop, and premiership cups etc on display, form part of a basketball facility.... wtf.

The game generates millions, but the AFL have not spent a zac on helping the Kanga's with their facilities. Poor buggers.

Most VFL games are similar. Lucky to get a few hundred at the game and it’s a bog average standard of footy

I'd respectfully disagree with you there Jim.

I have been to 3 or 4 Box Hill games this year, and at each game there would have been several thousand. Box Hill Vs Collingwood a few weeks ago, I'd estimate at least 3,500, maybe even 5,000.

Box Hill home games have catering, clubrooms open, along with the cricket club, where you can get $5 tins & watch the races.

As for the standard.... when both teams have around 50% AFL listed guys its pretty decent.

Didn't the VFL beat the SANFL earlier this year?

They beat us for the first time in years but I don’t take those state game too seriously.
The top 3 SANFL sides would be top 4 comfortably in the VFL IMO. Sturt and Glenelg easily the best two state league sides in the land and would belt most VFL sides
