For convenience he does Flaggy u10's and u12's back to back on a Sunday morning. u10's is fine but in u12's my 11yo son plays and Im assistant coach so we have all 3 facets of the game covered, has created some funny moments and great talk over the dinner table Sunday night.
Already been told off for approaching him during a break (was just to tell him that he won't be playing in the u15 game straight afterwards) as I forgot coaches aren't allowed to approach umpires during the game

Extremely tough, particularly as the 2/3s dont tackle whereas the 4/5s do. Additionally the lack of zones meant I had an AFL like maul at many ball ups.
14 minutes of game play and I had a serious sweat up. Also got $20 for my efforts... not sure I could do it for a living!

I seem to recall one member posting about umpiring in the SFL a few years ago.
LM is an umpire still I believe.
Cheers. He can be my online mentor!

Got a text Sunday morning asking me to take an appointment due to another ump falling ill. It was for my daughters Div 3 womens game Sunday arvo. Not ideal but the league was a bit stuck & they knew I would be at the game anyway. I had specifically asked NOT to be appointed to her games, but what can you do?
Played on a small oval, that the council had done some work to during the week. Whatever it was that they did, meant it was a mud heap! Fairly uneventful game, conditions not helping. Did the game with the NFL umpires boss, who is an ex AFL ump. I won't name drop, but for him to be on this oval, officiating this standard..... Its a long way from the G!
At half time I asked him what was the best spray he ever copped at the top level. Said he couldn't recall the best one, but was happy to share the funniest one. It involved Wayne Carey.
Carey to Ump - "Hey, can I be penalized for thinking"
Ump to Carey - "No Wayne, you can't be penalized for thinking"
Carey to Ump - "That's great, coz I think you are a ******* dickhead"
The other one he gave me was Peter Bell..... said he just hated umpires.... with a passion.
Didn't get to ping Miss C, may have missed a push in the back to her..... so she told me in the car one the way home.

The pleasing part was the conduct of both sides, usually close games bring out the worst in players and spectators, it was a great game to umpire and be a part of, always a great sign of sportsmanship when every player from the losing side still shakes your hand and comments on the umpiring for the day.

Assuming these are back to back games? Do you run them both with another umpy?

Get this coming weekend off, which is good, as the knee has flared up, and now I have strained an Achilles as well.
