Get back on track, lads!
I agree DW. Having to have played four games to qualify at this stage of the season is pretty harsh, maybe two or three would have been more appropriate. I'm confident in saying that the majority of the Berri team were prepared to play whatever team Renmark put on the park if it meant getting a game underway. Having said that, going against By laws can lead to problems down the track, so I can appreciate that point of view also. One of our delegates was pretty strong on that point and seeing as he had spent a truck load of time going through the by laws in the off season in an attempt to prevent this sort of thing happening, it wasn't a surprise really.
There has been a fair bit of sh#t flying around, most of it directed at Berri as usual and quite unfairly when you have a look at all the facts.
Firstly, it wasn't Berri's decision alone to stick to the by laws, it was the RTCA's. Two Berri delegates didn't have the numbers to decide on that, they needed support and there was plenty of it apparently.
Secondly, Renmark had one more game than Berri to qualify it's players due to Monash's withdrawal on the eve of the first round.
Thirdly, according to the records for the season thus far, Renmark had a total of 18 players qualified for Saturday's final, not 10 as reported in the Pioneer. Word has it also that there were indeed players willing to put their hand up for a crack at it, but the heirachy made the call that they wouldn't be up to it.
I personally would have liked the RTCA to make some sort of allowance so blokes that had played three games could have played, but they didn't. Perhaps the blow torch should instead be applied to Renmark for pulling their side when they had 18 qualified players.
