Well said by Harvey Jolly. He raised some very good points, but one in particular that was also missing 5 years ago, what is the opinion of the Grade Cricket Committee? They were MIA 5 years ago - yet constitutionally they’re the ones with the power?

According to Harvey Jolly on that radio interview, 12% of South Australia's youth lives in the City of Onkaparinga. The club asked SACA about this and were told it's about getting to a number. Eight or ten clubs. Population not a consideration.

Seems quite backwards if that's the case.

Surely you look at what is the ideal structure for grade cricket both in terms of number of clubs, catering for all metro and country areas, maximising what we have to work with etc and then work towards that.

I wonder if Adelaide are being strong on retaining their name, retaining their crest etc in order to 'sell' the merger to their own members?

If it's the South Adelaide Stingrays based at Darlington they'd likely vote no.

Adelaide Buffalos based at plush new Darlington digs with Josh Barrett added to the 1st Grade then maybe they'll vote yes.

If SD vote “no” will their current financial position see them around in 3-5 years?

Agreed - also the point about Sinclair saying that the "new ground" will be near the city end of the expressway so travel shouldn't be an issue. Easy thing to say when you live in the leafy inner-city suburbs and it's not your problem. Typical arrogance and I would totally understand why families in the southern areas wouldn't want to travel that bit further than they have to already.

Harvey said it exactly how it is.
As a former general manager of saca I'd go with what he says.
One third of the population in Adelaide will not have grade club presence.
It makes zero sense to move further north.

When Melbourne went through the merger process with its clubs they relocated clubs further away from the CBD and out into the faster growing population centres. Catering for the urban sprawl.

Seems common sense to me.

I've felt for a while that ND/SD are the canaries in the coal mine. If they are healthy then SA cricket is in a good place. The leafy suburbs and city beachside suburbs will always be cricket strongholds but there is no growth happening there. Improvement won't come from those areas.

North & South is where the population is growing and needs to be harnessed (throw in Mt Barker/Littlehampton too). Also those areas are more vulnerable because some suburbs are lower socio economic ones (so don't play cricket) or have a higher % of multicultural families, many of whom are unfamiliar with the game. Easy for cricket to lose presence in those areas which is disastrous and nigh on impossible to get back.

Its very frustrating that us mugs can see this is a dumb idea yet saca execs can't or won't!
And the members vote has been put off for another 2 weeks so saca can bully them a bit longer to get it over the line.

The battle for 4th spot is becoming interesting.

4. Sturt 115 points
5. Glenelg 105
6. West Torrens 100

At lunch on Day 2
Sturt 8/95 chasing Glenelg 318
Adelaide 120 lost 1st Innings to West Torrens 317

Presume both Sturt and Adelaide will follow-on and Glenelg and West Torrens chasing a much needed outright.

Two rounds to go:

165 University (play WT and Pros)
165 Kensington (BYE and ND)
140 East Torrens (SD and WT)
125 Glenelg (Port and Wood)

120 West Torrens (Uni and ET)
115 Sturt (TTG and SD)

Same top 7 in both 1st and 2nd Grade at the moment. 5 of those 7 clubs also have women’s programs.

You could justify having an 8-team Premier Grade next season with those clubs plus the Adelaide/Southerns merger if it gets through, or if not, the club that makes the best case for themselves. Full home/away competition for all 3 formats.

Allow opportunity for promotion of clubs that miss out on making Premier Grade by winning the 2nd Grade comp (I’d call it District Grade as it would be an XI of all clubs in SACA representing all districts). The 2nd Grade/District comp would become much stronger as a result of 55 1st Grade standard players now being a part of it, plus the competitiveness of this grade determining possibility of promotion/relegation, plus make this grade Saturday cricket only to encourage senior players to prolong their careers and be there to assist emerging talent through the system.

Encourage talented players to play above their grade if good enough. Scrap whites. 3rd and 4th grade teams optional for each club. Encourage a club to relocate to Mt Barker or create new junior and women’s club there with view to seniors in future - utilising new facilities and growing region.

Heard a rumour on the weekend that given the likelihood the proposed "merger" between Adelaide and Southerns won't happen, SACA are then going to scrap the whole comp after this season and "invite" clubs to apply to play in a new competition from next season. Not sure if this is true or just a bit a commentary and don't know what criteria clubs are required to fulfil to play on the so-called new comp?

It makes sense unfortunately, it pretty much forces clubs to amalgamate.

Heard same, SACA are pushing these comments, almost as a threat to Clubs. You sort out mergers or we will form a new comp and that way it cant be challenged via the Constitution. Reckon have Women's teams high on the criteria, but so should having juniors and doubt the wealthy at Uni would let this go thru without a massive fight

You know SACA wouldn’t invite WT, Port or Woodville and would site the Adelaide Uni facilities at West Beach a great place for a junior set up for the western suburbs!

After looking like he's been batting with a toothpick for the summer in the Test matches and Big Bash - after a match winning century for TTG on the weekend, Head appears to have his confidence back and is hammering the WA attack around the WACA. 52 of 54 balls with SA 2/137 and Hunt on 60.

Could well be the last ever Adelaide Buffaloes match over the next 2 Saturdays with the bye in Round 13.

Southerns last ever home 1st grade game too.

Ouch!

By the way - good to see a couple of up and coming youngsters make big 100s today (Capel & T Kelly). They are both in a bit of form at the moment.
