Tea Tree Gully look to have booked a GF berth at stumps on day one. 5/339 with Head on 165 not out. TTG also just need a draw.

I'm sorry this system of non-compulsory declarations is a disgrace. Batting first is already an advantage in a final but knowing you just have to bat for 2 days is the reason a team scores just over 2 runs an over in a whole day!

If it's good enough for the minor round then what is the problem?

It's a good rule in the minor round because teams have to earn points to make the finals. So the emphasis is on winning and it becomes quite tactical with declarations.

Finals this changes.

It's good that the top two teams are rewarded for their season though. They should get an advantage.

Cause it fosters crap cricket.

Which is why 20/20 specialists are now entering test cricket...
Getting away from the forum, but if Grade cricket doesn't encourage run rate, then we'll end up with a bunch of containment bowlers and survival batsmen.
Just saying..

Given the structure of the Shield comp now, I reckon there should be compulsory declaration after 100 overs, but only play 90 overs per day. If 1st innings team is good enough to bat 100 overs and leave 2nd innings team with 80 overs to chase down total then so be it. No draws.

The current situation in finals and the Shield final is not desirable IMO.

No matter for today. Fingers crossed WT can finish off in 1st session and an entertaining run chase this afternoon.

It is okay for the minor round as if there is not a complete result, neither side wins and neither side loses. However, it means that a Draw results in a Win and a Loss in the finals.
Btw, Woodville all out for 276. WT chasing 277 off 73 overs. Woodville have a great attack, but it is 'game on'.

Cheers

Woodvulle vs Tea Tree Gully Grand Final next week. Woodville too good. Andrews outsmarted the key batsmen, taking 5 fa and bowling his spin for 25 consecutive overs while the pacemen rotated from one end. Kelly provided some resistance but ran out of partners.

Kensington didn't even bat in the other game!

The fact that one side doesnt even get a bat just makes a mockery of the system.
I know thats the rules but just doesnt seem right to me.
Maybe im from the old school but I enjoy seeing a contest not a side bat for 2 days

Kensington could have chosen to bat. But really it was no point. Nearly 500 runs off 50 overs not going to happen.

Could have chosen to bat at the coin toss as well. Top 2 deserve advantage.

Which may encourage [some] of the families of the team who bats first to roll up on the second day.
Take nothing away from the grand finalists. Well done to both and a deserving contest.

They also could have chosen to bat at the coin toss. Winning the toss (according to Mycricket) and bowling!

Woodville in essence this weekend could pick 9 batsman, 2 all rounders, win the toss and bowl, set defensive fields, let TTG bat the first day, force them to make the play, but with no fielding restrictions they can bowl wide of off stump and set fields to that.. then just bat out a day with a side full of batsman and they win the flag..

Surely some sort of compulsory declaration has to be enforced, the side should have at least 80 overs to chase the runs.. I like the idea of the side being able to bat on for 10-15 overs on day 2, leaving 80 overs minimum to chase what they need..

3 day game for the final isn't it? But yes, you can pick a batting heavy side.

Day 3 is a reserve day. It should be a minimum 3 days. We are the only state top tier competition to only have a 2 day final last season. I'm guessing we'd be the same this year.

Get used to this situation as well. It was discussed at Committee level and it won't be changing. Clubs are sick of the rules changing from year to year.
