Two questions for Spelly... Minor/Major Rounds

Postby SnappyTom » Mon Aug 27, 2007 8:09 pm

Spelly, I know you're working on one of these, but I have two questions for your immense talents:
1. How many times has only one team defeated all others in an SANFL minor round?
2. When was the last time the same two matches in a final minor round followed into finals in SANFL (if ever)?

As in, if results go:
:D Sturt win/loss
:D Eagles win/loss
 North win/win
we could see North vs Sturt and Eagles vs Glenelg both from Round 23 to Elimination and Qualifying Final...

Ever been done before - I doubt it?

I said to you in the other thread you asked it in that no.1 will take some time. Don't worry, I'll try and work that out this week, unless Ecky can work Access quicker than I can Excel. ;)

The only time no.2 question has happened before was in 1912 when Port played Torrens and West played Sturt in Round 14, then in the 1st and 2nd Semi finals, but the 2nd Semi was played a week later than the 1st Semi.

These are all from 1945, and are occasions when one has occured:
In 1988, Glenelg and Sturt met in Round 22, then in the Elimination Final.
In 1987, Port and Norwood met in Round 22, then in the Qualifying Final.
In 1984, South and Norwood met in Round 22, then in the Elimination Final.
In 1976, Sturt and Glenelg met in Round 21, then in the Qualifying Final.
In 1973, Norwood and Port met in Round 21, then in the Elimination Final.
In 1967, Port and Sturt met in Round 20, then in the 2nd Semi Final - though this was two weeks after Round 20, and the same goes for 2nd Semi matches before this.
In 1963, Torrens and Port met in Round 20, then in the 2nd Semi Final.
In 1960, West and Norwood met in Round 18, then in the 1st Semi Final.
In 1958, North and West met in Round 18, then in the 2nd Semi Final.
In 1957, West and Port met in Round 18, then in the 2nd Semi Final.
In 1950, Norwood and Glenelg met in Round 17, then in the 2nd Semi Final.

A slight variation to this one - the dogs in 2002 played Sturt in 3 consecutive games (2 finals), has that happened before?

I know Sturt played other teams in between each of these, just looking from one teams perspective.

3 matches versus the same club in a row:
Port played Norwood in 1921 - 1st Semi, 1st Semi Replay, Challenge Final

Eagles played Port in 1994 - Round 25, 2nd Semi, Grand Final
Central played Sturt in 2002 - Round 23, 2nd Semi, Grand Final

3 out of 4 matches versus the same club:
Port played Norwood in 1921 - 1st Semi, 1st Semi Replay, Challenge Final
Port played South in 1935 - Round 16, 2nd Semi, Grand Final
Glenelg played Norwood in 1950 - Round 17, 2nd Semi, Grand Final
Port played West in 1954 - Round 17, 2nd Semi, Grand Final
Port played West in 1956 - Round 17, 2nd Semi, Grand Final
North played Port in 1972 - Round 20, 2nd Semi, Grand Final
Glenelg played Sturt in 1976 - Round 21, Qualifying, Preliminary
Sturt played Glenelg in 1976 - Round 21, Qualifying, Preliminary
Port played Glenelg in 1977 - Round 21, 2nd Semi, Grand Final
Norwood played Port in 1997 - Round 23, 2nd Semi, Grand Final
Port played Norwood in 1997 - Round 23, 2nd Semi, Grand Final

Also, in 1919 North played Sturt 4 times in 6 games:
Round 13, 1st Semi, Challenge Final, Challenge Final Replay
And Sturt played North in those matches out of 5.

Should be fairly straight forward to do using Access - give me a few minutes :)

Along the same lines Spelly, but when was the last time (since WWTFC entered) that four finalists played in the last minor round against each other?

2002 - Central vs Sturt and Norwood vs Eagles in Round 23.

Also, since 1991:
1997 - Norwood vs Port and North vs Central in Round 23.

Just going through the old posts here and noticed this. Surely Glenelg beat all teams in 1973 given that they lost only 1 game for the year?

You missed the point of the post you quoted, its not a list of teams that beat all other teams, its a list of when only one team beat all other teams. Maybe the team that beat Glenelg in that one game also beat the other 8 teams?

Actually, looking at the results of that year; I think Ecky might have overlooked that while North did beat Glenelg in the minor round, both matches against Sturt were lost. So Glenelg in fact were the only team to beat every other team in 1973.
