Notable Reserves Players

Postby spell_check » Tue Jan 10, 2006 1:41 pm

I think that some players who didn't play SANFL at League level but are notable for other achievements i.e. AFL, or are known otherwise deserve a mention here. A player such as Wayne Carey who played a few with North late in 1987, for instance. Or Gary Sweet, who played in the Glenelg reserves runner-up side in 1979, is better known for his acting roles. I also think this is a good place to acknowledge a player who has played over 100 reserves games, regardless if they have played some league games. Take Norwoods' Darren Loffler - as far as I know he played only 8 league games from 1994 to 2000, but he played 116 reserves games up to 2000. I think also, a name such as Andy Moo should get in here too, because I don't think he played a league game for Norwood, but a name like that you wouldn't forget in a hurry. So are there any other players who fit the categories above that should be in here?

The list is:
Charlie Anderson - Port
Roger Delaney - Port
Wayne Carey - North
Justin Casserly - Central/North
David Frost - Port
Peter Hargreaves - Sturt
Tate Kaesler - Sturt/North
Darren Loffler - Norwood
John McInnes - Norwood
Darren Mead - Port
Andy Moo - Norwood
Damian Stevens - South
Gary Sweet - Glenelg
Mark Wade - Port
Harold Wegener - Torrens

John McInnes (Norwood) is one who springs quickly to mind. As we know he won Three Reserves Magarey Medals and (I think) he still holds the record for the biggest gap between league games (not counting guys that went Interstate and then came back such as Platten,Robertson etc.).

Here's a small job for you Spelly - compile a list of the players who have played the most reserves games
It would be interesting to see who has played the most.

By the way, I am planning to do this for Glenelg at some stage, if the information can be obtained.

I'd imagine it would be a bit more than just a small job. :)

A good way to do this is to look through clubs' annual reports. It would be near impossible to go through the newspapers because of the continual changing of reserves sides.

However, I do know that both Tate Kaesler (North) and Damian Stevens (South) have played over 100 reserves matches.

Unfortunately, I don't think that most club Annual Reports (especially older ones) have this information.

Glenelg's 2005 Annual Report didn't even mention the Reserves Grand Final, and some of the reserves players (such as Ben Wade who played in every game) didn't get mentioned in the report at all!

I think the only way to accurately work out who played is from club team sheets/stats sheets or the SANFL.

Reakon that honour might be Shine Hosking's.

A famous reserves player from Port is Charlie Anderson (think that's his name.)

Played a handful of league games but was captain-coach of Port reserves when it won five on the trot in the 1950s.

More recently, Roger Delaney, Darren Mead and Mark Wade played a heap of reserves footy,

But one player who stands out for mine is DAVID FROST.

Very long story, despite my old man playing for Torrens he (and my mum) were both Norwood supporters.
To add to the confusion my step dad was a Torrens supporter!
