It was a great effort for an SANFL team to make the semi-finals of the then Fosters Cup. If memory serves they beat Melbourne at Football Park in the 1st round and then beat Collingwood at Waverley. They then lost to Hawthorn by around 5-7 goals I think.

I am certain these games were on TV and they were played mid-week but no doubt they would have been on tape-delay so that they could start on channel 7 at 8.30pm.

Oh for the days when we were in the best 4 clubs in Australia on the field where now we're 17th. Its been a gradual decline since 72 when we were No 1.

The standard had dipped before then. About 13th I'd say (unless you beat a VFL side that year, then I take that back and make it around 10th)
Even Norwood managed to beat Geelong in 1985.

72 is 10 yeas behind 76?

Must admit though, the Bays did pioneer choking in Grand Finals in the modern era and we did follow behind you nicely in that aspect in 86 and 89! At least you lead us in something!

Spelly, have you got details of any other SANFL clubs that won in Victoria besides North?

Norwood defeated Footscray in 1983 at Waverley:
Norwood 4.2 8.5 11.7 14.9 (93)
Footscray 1.4 3.5 7.6 11.11 (77)
In addition to this, South Adelaide beat Sandringham and Port Melbourne at the Lake Oval in 1978.
Port Adelaide beat Prahran and Central beat Preston in 1979, both played at Preston.
