1979 NFL-Escort Cup

Postby Benchwarmer » Sat Dec 23, 2023 12:34 am

In 1979, the last season of the NFL night series saw two SANFL clubs receive a bye through to the quarter-finals (Glenelg and Woodville).

I am trying to work out why they were given precedence. Had it been based on the SANFL ladder from 1978, Norwood (premier) and Sturt (runner up) should have received the bye and if it was based on the 1978 NFL-Escort Cup then Glenelg and South Adelaide should have gotten the nod as the two finalists.

Or was the bye worked out based on a hat draw?

Glenelg finished fourth and Woodville finished sixth in the SANFL in 1978.

I don't recall but I think your suggestion of a hat draw would be correct.
