1942-45 players

Postby spell_check » Tue Aug 31, 2021 9:54 pm

So, I believe, apart from some goal scoring discrepancies, I've completed info compiling on who played in these years. There's a few questions though:

In 1944, an Olsson appears as 19th man for Norwood-North in Round 10..but nothing else is mentioned of this player, and nothing appears in any thing ever mentioned here, nor in either club history web pages.
Two rounds later, it says that a Max Walker from Melbourne played in Round 12, and is definitely not the Max Walker (Maxwell Edwin Walker) who played in the first 9 rounds. Men of Norwood stated that Maxwell E. Walker played 10 games in 1941, and Max Walker played one in 1944, and one in 1948.
The Redlegs player pages has only Maxwell Edwin Walker playing 10 matches - presumably one in 1941, 9 in 1944 and 1 in 1948.

In 1943, Ken Herbert (Collingwood, and also later served on Hawthorn's committee) played Rds 9, 11, 12 and 1st Semi for Sturt-South. The following year, he plays in Rds 1 and 2. I've seen reference to a John S. Herbert playing those two matches, but newspapers only state that Ken Herbert was in Adelaide at the time, and nothing about a John Herbert. So, for now, all are credited to Ken Herbert.

There are typos on the names currently listed on the out of date "Every Player List" in this forum, two, for example are:
V Ashberger South = Valentine Aschberger, played rds 7 and 10 1943
L Valadares Port = Leslie Roy Valladares, Rds 8-12 1943

So, here are a list of players who I don't have a date of birth or death:
F J Archer
Clarence J Baker
Thomas Barnes
A Bertram
Keith Brown
T C Charlesworth
Raymond J Cock
Arthur J Collins
James Crouch
Kevin Patrick Daly
Herbert G Dillon
Alan Dolman
William Dunbar
W J Edwards
James Flannigan
Arthur W Franklin
Ronald F Hall
Ross Hall
Douglas M Hamilton
D C Henderson
B Hewitt
William F Hudson
Robert V Jervis
Chris Johnson
William P Jordan
A John Lawrence
Robert Longman
William McFarlane
Colin A McKenzie
W J McMahon
Peter Moore
John Leo Moroney
Michael J Murphy
Stanley Oborn
? Olsson
William Owens
Raymond S Phillips
William J Pike
Clive Plant
Richard Proctor
Timothy C Reilly
Robert Wentworth Ryan
Keith Shepley
Peter Arthur Robert Slattery
Jim Sweeney
James Talbot
Vic Taylor
Laurence Toms
John Tredrea
Max Walker
W S Walsh
Harold F Warne
Kenneth John Williams
Colin A Wilson
Stanley Thomas Young

Please note: I think B Hewitt is Bryan b. 13/1/1924 d. 30/9/1992, and T.C Charlesworth is actually Trevor Lloyd or even Lloyd Trevor Charlesworth, b. 24/9/1920 d. 19/5/2004. I'm confident on Hewitt, but 50/50 on Charlesworth.

Also, here's an incomplete, or no birth date, but also a death date:
1 1918 13 3 1997 William Edward John Allen
1909 30 6 1983 Allan John Joseph Smith
1913 2011 Joseph O'Shaughnessy
30 5 1980 George Christian Thomas
17 12 2009 John William Faulkhead
22 7 2021 Thomas Edward Garland

Garth was my wife's Grandpa's brother. Garth's younger brother Brian also played league football for South. I hadn't seen this link before - great history. My wife is a family history buff and has some treasured letters sent from Garth to his younger brother from during the war. I believe they lived close to Prospect Oval growing up during Ken Farmer's era - including when he kicked 23 goals against West Torrens.
