Gary Mousley (Spider) who played 209 games for South and 3 for Sturt passed away last night aged 69. Had one season at Edwardstown in the SAFA as well.

A stalwart at the Past Players (worked at every home game on the hill) and played in our last grand final side.

Might be wrong but I reckon Spider was with The Towns one of the years that Channel Nine were covering the SAFA :?:

Condolences to family and friends, and colleagues past and recent.

Panther with a passion for game
GARY MOUSLEY

CLUB stalwart Gary Mousley was involved with South Adelaide for more than 50 years, coming as close as any Panther in that half-century to an elusive premiership.

Mousley won two pre-season Escort Cup premierships, in 1978 and 1979, and played in South’s only grand final appearance since 1964, a 31-point loss to Port Adelaide in 1979.

Affectionately known as ”Spider”, Mousley played 212 league games from 1970 to 1982, earning South Adelaide and SANFL life membership in 1980.

He was a quick and reliable defender who starred during the 1979 finals series. Mousley was known for his loping gait and pinpoint accuracy when kicking.

After hanging up the boots, he continued to play a key role at the club. He worked behind the scenes with the past players and officials association, including as president.

Mousley worked on game days, behind the bar and at the past players and officials room, known by all as the “Hut”.

He is one of just 16 Panthers to play 200 games in the club’s 144-year history. But Mousley did stray from the Panthers’ fold briefly on two occasions.

In 1973, he spent a season at Edwardstown, where he won a premiership.

Then, in 1982, he had a brief stint at Sturt, where he played three games.

The Edwardstown flag was noteworthy because, in 1966, Mousley won a junior premiership with South against the Townies.

After snaring a senior flag, Mousley immediately returned to the Panthers in 1974, playing in finals from 1977-79.

The SANFL extended its deepest sympathy to Mousley’s family and honoured his outstanding service to the game in South Australia.

South Adelaide chief executive Neill Sharpe said the club was “deeply saddened and shocked to learn of the passing of Gary”, which was sudden.

“He had a real passion for the club and was still a regular part of its fabric through his involvement in the past players,” Sharpe said.

He is survived by partner Anneke, children James and Dannielle and one grandchild.
