Woodville West Torrens - best team of the last 30 years

This is a very strong team and there will always be debates who should have been picked. I couldn’t recall whether there was certain criteria that needed to be met (e.g. minimum games played, selecting players from each era) but I feel it is reasonably accurate.

That said, it bugs me when clubs release these types of teams but don’t place players in the positions they actually played or don’t actually pick a side that is realistic e.g. selecting three ruckman in a side would never happen. A couple of my comments.

It feels like this was a bit of a ‘fan favourite’ team over a team that was purely based on skill. There is no way that Chris Hall, Jack Hayes and Petrenko are in our best side of the last 30 years.

Where is Scott Morphett? It’s ridiculous that he couldn’t make this team. You'd think that kicking 99 goals in 1991 (club record) and being a damaging premiership midfielder/half forward for us in an era when the competition was much stronger would mean something. An oversight?

Why are we playing three ruckman? We should only be picking two. I’d pick Parry and Niemann over Lindsay. Parry and Lindsay were both great tap ruckman (far better than Niemann) but Parry was far more damaging around the ground and able to take many more pack marks. I’d have Niemann as the backup ruckman as he was more versatile than Lindsay and able to go forward and be a reasonable target up there and kick goals.

Taylor and Grocke are named in positions they rarely play and you would probably swap them on match day. I was tossing up between Taylor or Passador (who I think has a better average goals) and is a tough decision. But Taylor at his best was a better mark and more likely than Passador to kick a huge bag when he was on.

Powell never really made his mark playing on the half back flank where named. A really good midfielder but would rather have Shane Breuer or Weideman in the side (if they qualify with enough games played.

I’d select Nick Pesch instead of Adam Pearce despite the latter getting club champion. I just feel Pesch was more consistent over a longer period.

I’d select Steven Sziller over Jason Sziller due to being much faster and more likely to hit the scoreboard when resting up forward.

Others who could easily have made the side but didn’t and could consider themselves unlucky include Tim Inkster, Jason Spehr and Glenn Freeborn.

I think you hit the nail on the head - being put to fans means a more fan favourite, rather than a panel of past players/staff/historians etc choosing it alone. One position the club has always been strong in is the ruck, so perhaps three was chosen because of that, combined with the first point.

Absolutely Scott Morphett should have been in the team. To be honest, there would be minimal change from the 20 year team, one thing this 30 year team has right is Andrew Taylor (remember Taylor was omitted from that side in favour of Ken McGregor). I'd only think Thompson, Giuffreda, Lewis and Goldsworthy could replace anyone out of that side.

I’ll have a go at mine.

F: M.Kluzek A.Taylor* N.Pesch
HF: T.Inkster A.Grocke* R.Pyman
C: L.Jarrad G.Colville* A.Payze*
HB: A.Rogers (VC)* B.Frewen M.McKenzie (C)*
FB: J.Tape* S.Hall M.Goldsworthy
R: P.Lindsay* L.Powell* J.Cicolella*
I: A.Rowntree S.Morphett D.Niemann S.Sziller

I’ve put a * next to the players I’d confidently pick in their position against any other Eagles players.

McKenzie could just as easily be named CHB or on the ball or interchange.

Plenty of worthy names I’ve left out.

I forgot about Pyman - yes he'd be around the mark in our best team of the last 30 years. The year that Nathan Buckley was running around in the SANFL for the magpies Pyman at that point was comfortably SA's #2 midfield prospect to get drafted after a dominant year. I think he ended up getting fined by the AFL for draft tampering?

We've had some really good centre-half backs over the last 30 years. Frewen, Schwartz, Prymke and Bullus were all very good players for us in this position at various times across this period.

I can't believe that a gun specialist full forward like Passador couldn't make the team. I wish we had similar today: it would certainly straighten up the attack.

Just being pedantic, but its annoying that a SANFL side is named from backs first too!!!

Very good side .. Only ones I'd question are Hayes, Hall and Pearce - The first two are good players, but would have thought the Eagles have had better over the journey. Pearce I just flat out can't remember.

Would naturally defer to Eagles fans though who have seen them play most weeks.

At a guess you'd have to play more than 6 games and I'd hazard a guess he wasn't BOG in most of those.

Sadly Bruce's best days were behind him when WWT was formed. Despite playing finals in 1991/92 I don't think Lindsay played in any of these matches which was a shame because he was such a great servant of West Torrens but perhaps only played in one final in the early 80s.

I don't recall that there was any criteria on selection but certainly players who had played many more matches for the club would have been remembered more by supporters.

Players like Stuart Nichol, Prymke, Mark Kennedy, Hamish Simpson, David Ugrinic from the early to mid 90s would have been contenders if they had played more than 1 or 2 seasons for us.

I’d say Bruce Lindsay would make an “All-time” West Torrens team.

He played in both 1991 finals matches.

JK, Adam Pearce won the 1999 Football Budget award, despite not polling a single Magarey vote. The next year, Colville won the award, which was now named the R.O. Shearman Medal, by 11 votes under the 3-2-1 system. But of course, as it always decreed for the club, no Magarey Medal.

I agree with most of the above. I think the early teams are a little under-represented. Morphett should be a monty and even Peter Schwarz, although his position is covered by a couple of top players.

Chris Hall shouldn't be within a bull's roar of the side. Of players to debut within the last 15 years, I'd probably only consider Goldsworthy. At any rate he should be way ahead of Chris Hall.

That was my thinking re: Hall who is a good reliable player, but think there’s better (Goldsworthy, Stokes etc). Eagles have had some good forwards over the journey, Passador seems a bit stiff, even Grocke who was a very good player.

I will keep plugging for Passador. After all, he was/is the club's all-time goal scorer. And I wouldn't want to be in the way of one of his power leads down the ground. I think (from a poor memory) that he held the club's record for the largest bench press too.

I'm sure the side would be different if picked by a 'select panel' rather than the members who have 'favourites'.

Morphett > Passador > Grocke

Morphett should definitely be in the team. Passador was a better player than Grocke but depending on how you structure the forward line - e.g. I'd have Taylor at CHF and Morphett FF - could be very hard to find a spot for him.

Passa tended to play poorly in wet weather, but obviously when he was on he'd kick a big bag.

Rob Pyman - WWT's first ever goalscorer - would also be in the best team.

Passador - 113 games 312 goals has to be in there.

I'd take Hayes out, Passador in.

I'd take Rowntree out, Pyman on the wing, Jarrad to the bench.

I'd take Parry out, Matt Kluzek in.

I'd take Grocke out, Morphett in.

I'd have Lindsay 1st ruck, Neimann on the bench.

Agree with most of those changes Booney but as much as I loved Paul Lindsay, I'd have Parry instead for the work he did around the ground which was immense. Niemann on the bench for mine.
