Great work Fourth Estate

Putting my South blinkers on, what a mess. Only two 'winning' seasons during that 23 year period, 1991 and 2006 (where many would argue we underachieved).

Always felt as though we played in a lot of draws, which I guess the data confirms.

Not far behind you 2009 was woeful for us out in straight sets and it all fell apart after that.

2019 Made up for it and beating Port in the GF was even better.

Question for FE (and I know this will span the era’s you’re using) and any other Bay fans - when Westies won the flag under Mark Mickan did it a sting a little?

From memory at the time he left most Bay supporters were in support of it after another period of finals underachievement, but there were a few is disagreement, almost preferring to risk finals heartache in the hope of jagging a flag rather than the risk of missing the major round altogether.

In hindsight we were never really going to jag a flag in that period - Mickan won 3 out of 18 vs Centrals in his time at Glenelg. Our record against WWT wouldn’t have been much better. I supported the club’s decision to move him on, his replacement however...

IIRC the call from certain sections of the Bay fan base for Kris Massie had been growing for a while? I think you touch on an interesting point, underachieving probably wasn’t it’s usual self when you had to try and get past a mob like that Dogs outfit.

1995
Interesting season for South Adelaide

7/5/1995
It was SA first match at Noarlunga Oval
SA 2-4...6-10...7-14....8-16
GL 2-2...6-6...13-11...16-15

South Adelaides Julian Farrkas kicked the very first goal at the oval
SA kicked the first 2 goals but ended up copping a belting
The irony of SA 8-16 is that the total points add up to 64 , a golden number at the club
There was a pre match Parade of past SA/GL players
Noarlunga, later christianed Carlunga by myself, ended up with a change of name 10 years later
In 2005 it was changed to Hickinbotham Oval , named after the real estate man Alan Hickinbotham , not named after 2 former English Test cricketers
Noarlunga is my favorite opposition football ground
It has a distinctive different feel compared to other ovals , feels great to be there

SA played at Noarlunga 6 times that season with a 4-2 record
TheIr first win at the oval was against NA
SA 8-5
NA 4-9
Judging by the scores the Port Noarlunga doctor might have been blowing, and there might have been a bit of precipitation ?

The other interesting match for SA was round 11 at Adelaide Oval
ST 10-10
SA 19-16
It was the first time the blood rule came in , round 11 , and a SA win to commemorate the occasion

A quite incredible 25 rounds were played in 1995
Round 25
SA were 5th with 11 wins[22]
WA were 6th with 10.5 wins[21]
It was a simple equation , a SA win and a finals berth

WA 25-13
GL 13-10

NW 2-2...9-4...13-7...19-10
SA 6-1...8-6....12-7...18-9
SA narrowly missed the 1995 finals in this game played at Football Park , and finished in 6th spot

Did anyone attend the inaugural match at Noarlunga ?
Did anyone attend the rd25 loss to Norwood at Football Park ?

My mail at the time which was close to situation told me that Mickan had lost the players and it was time to move one. In all honesty Mickan should have pulled the pin after 2010

The decisions after that were confounding.

My Mail also told me that the appointment of Nick Stevens was a monumental blunder.

My source tells me that the Board was told not to pick Nick Stevens for the every problems that led to his imprisonment. This info came from people in the know in Melbourne.

The problem I believe was that they were that far down the track they had no option but to select him.

Bad feelings when West won, a little. We had the talent in 2008-2009 to win the flag the usual problems appeared as they do for us in finals.

But last year made up for it finally beat those B*st*rds from Alberton and may they drown in their own mire.

Memory of the day is a bit hazy but I was definitely there for the first game in ‘95.
I will however have to disagree with you, Mal. Along with Woodville, Noarlunga is my least favourite ground to attend.

We pulled* a league debutant off the field off the reserves at the 5 min mark of the last qtr of the ressies game. Cant remember who got injured in the warm up.

Jason Spivey fresh from the U/18s TAC cup 1994 made his debut that game (#13)

So we basically played with 19

My recollections was the 'Hill" was 3/4 Black and Gold given our historic ties to that area (see old youtube videos of SFL GF presentations from the 80s)

Other memory f that game was that South paraded their AFL Crows players around the ground pre league game. Jason McCartney gave us the Go Tigers given he played juniors with us (U/15 Samboy Cu)p and we signed him to play pending AFL draft in 1991. Pending if he got drafted by a non-Victorian club (mainly Brisbane) he was coming to the Bays.
Let that be a lesson to you Port, no one beats the Bays five times in a row in a GF and gets away with it!!!

1995

RD7
3 Umpires used for the first time in the SANFL
GL 28-23
ST 7-6

PA 22-20
SA 10-11

NW 22-14
WWT 9-11

WA 18-14
CD 19-8

NA bye
Theres a nice trivia question only 3 teams got maximum premiership points in the first round of 3 umpires
The umpires director at the time was South Adelaide junior footballer , Des dizzy Foster

R8
The first game at Noarlunga as posted previously

R11
The blood rule was first used
PA 9-15
NA 10-11

ST 10-10
SA 19-16

GL6-16
NW 20-21

CD 23-9
WWT 9-8

WA bye

R12
A match was played at Bennett Oval in Whyalla
WWT 20-16
GL 4-11
Port Power beat Western Bulldogs at this venue earlier this year

RD16
Gary macca McIntosh played his 300th game
WWT 0-1...0-3.....3-3.....6-5
NW...9-2...18-6..26-7..31-13
That is massive 158 point belting, the biggest hiding the WWT has endured in its briefish history
Macca also won the Magarey Medal[jointly with Glen oysters Kilpatrick] and the Fos Williams Medal in 1995

Gary Mcintosh didnt win Norwoods B/F in 1995 , running 2nd to a young up and coming ruckman Matthew Primus

Yes to both. Julian Farrkas (nickname WOULDYA) works for the SANFL these days. I was going to say that his name is spelt with one R but I notice (as you probably did) that the "checker" thinks this is a naughty word and does not allow it.

The round 25 loss was a game held as a curtain raiser before the AFL match.

1995 was the season that one Danny Del-Re played for us and topped the league goal kicking with 92.

yeah thanks for opening up that festering sore again JK.....

The calls for Mass came in the last six months after he won the 18s flag with the 18s in 2010 (his first year of coaching).

I thought Rubbers was done when he got fired mid-season. The boys for whatever reason were no longer listening to him (South game at Noarlunga in early May started the rot IMO). I had no opinion on who should get it but Mark was done. His final pre-game message where he challenged the boys to atone for our capitulation against 17 when the Dogs played at the Bay - next minute were 6 goals down at qtr time and Chad is going off at boys for not working.

However come 2015 I was stoked for Rubbers that he got a flag. He really is one of the nice guys of footy. So while I was p!ssed about how could Westies beat us to flag given how woeful they had been since 2006 (save 2012) may happiness for him was my over-riding emotion.

Sorry bud, only remembered bits and pieces about it because I was probably so focused on my mob trying to get out of a long barren mire back then.

Always wondered how deep the Oatey success at Sturt must have burnt some Norwood supporters in the Sturt heyday given there were probably some that thought we should never have parted ways at the time? But I digress ..

ROUND 16
Norwood Oval
2002

I remember this game !

NW 5-5....12-8....16-11...25-17[167]
PA 1-2......3-5.....5-7......7-8 [50]

An amazing 117 point win to NW on a balmy friday night at the parade
PA were in 5th position coming into this game , and eventually missed playing finals
The PA % took a battering
49-86 % to 47.32%

There were the after match on field presentations for the Williams Gallagher trophy
There was a slight lull and someone in the crowd yelled out
" Jarrod Cotton 10-3, Port Adelaide 7-8."

The send off law was brought into the SANFL in 1992
The law : A player who is reported by a field umpire or field umpires for a breach of the laws of the game , twice in the same match , or who is reported for a serious breach, shall be ordered from the ground for the remainder of the match

Has there ever been a player sent off in the SANFL ?
