G'Day All

A quick heads-up that I've just added a history of the NFL Night Series (1976-79) to my footy history site: http://www.hardballget.net

Each page features full results, crowds and match reports sourced from microfilm of the daily newspapers in SA, VIC and WA. Links for each series are below:

http://www.hardballget.net/nfl---1976-wills-cup.html
http://www.hardballget.net/nfl---1977-ardath-cup.html
http://www.hardballget.net/nfl---1978-escort-cup.html
http://www.hardballget.net/nfl---1979-escort-cup.html

Enjoy!

Fantastic website! I love the history of clubs playing matches against clubs and rep sides from interstate. As a Port supporter in my 30s I've known of, or seen Port playing games pre and mid season against the likes of Hawthorn (1985 in a preseason cup series, I think, curtain raiser was Norwood v Essendon), Geelong (1990), Collingwood (1993), Essendon (1993 & 1994), Fremantle (1995 and 1996 for the long forgotten Docklands Trophy), the ACT (1995 or 1996) and the NT (at least a couple times during the 1990s). I know Norwood and North also went to Darwin at some stage during the late 90s but did any other clubs play similar games?

I recall years ago someone told me that the Eagles played against Sydney in the Ansett Cup (or at least a trial game) in around 1994, when there were only 15 teams in the AFL - can any Eagles fans confirm this?

Yeah, I remember that game.

IIRC, the Swans pumped them by about fifteen goals...

I think the Eagles stuck with them for a quarter (it was maybe something like four goals to two at quarter time), then after quarter time it was all one way.

IIRC may have kicked the first five goals of the game and only two more, and lost by about 70 points.
Was pre-season of 1994, a trial game not part of the Ansett Cup, so with 14 teams, there was an odd number of first-round losers (if it was a knock-out format back then).

Funny thing about memory... it's often way off!

Sydney... 15.17 (107)
Eagles.........8.6 (54)

Crowd: 5762 at Footy Park.

Simon Minton-Connell kicked 6 for the Swans.
