Mitcham v Sturt

Anything to do with the history of the SANFL

Mitcham v Sturt

Postby JamesH » Mon Jun 18, 2012 3:17 pm

Fred Blochs history of the SAAFL stated that Mitcham once defeated Sturt. Does anyone have any details of this game?

I know in the 60s the SAAFL premiers played the SAFA (SANFL reserves) premers 4 tinmes for 4 losses.

It was a bit messy last night with all the rain..... plus we had to train in the dark because of a power cut

Our C and D grade played at Price Memorial oval yesterday and from all reports it was an absolute mudhole.

I'm not 100% certain whether this was the league team, but on 13 May 1915, there was a match between Sturt and Mitcham Park, who were one of the new teams in the SAFA (so I believe).

Results was Mitcham Park 13.5 83pts d Sturt 4.3 27pts, with Bugg (4), Brown (3) and Mashment (3) kicking 10 goals between them for Mitcham. My one question about this result is that I don't know if this was a SANFL v SAFA match or whether this was a match between some Sturt reserves or something and a club playing in a Sturt Association Football League, so some local league. But it may well be what you're after...

There was also a meeting around 24 April 1922 when Sturt went to play Mitcham, but with a recent player dispute taking place within the Sturt Football Club, it was decided by Mitcham to field 11 players who had recently left or been sacked by Sturt Football Club.

When the clubs met for the match, Sturt refused to play unless those 11 players retired from the game, in the end the clubs waited each out out, but after an hours delay, those 11 players chose not to play and Sturt then played Mitcham.

I'm not sure of the result of that game as yet...

Agreed... its a mystery to me too... can't believe Glenelg was a "district team" in some Sturt Association League either... but maybe they were, hence why so many of their players now play for us in the SANFL! :-)

In those days the Glenelg area was part of the Sturt zone. I guess the guys you are referring to are just going home 8)

From 1912-1915 (maybe longer) there were Glenelg FC and Glenelg Imperial FC teams playing in the Sturt Football Association. Glenelg Imperial finished runner up to Mitcham (who were undefeated) in 1914

In the same years there was a team called Sturt FC (now the club known as Marion), a Sturt Imperial FC and Sturt Ramblers FC.

Season 1915 had the following clubs:
Blackwood
Bridgewater
Glenelg
Glenelg Imperial
Goodwood
Mitcham
Mitcham Park
Semaphore Seasiders
Sturt
Sturt Imperial
Sturt Ramblers

There was a Glenelg United club playing in the Mid-Southern FA in 1929 (Glenelg Imperial were also competing at this time)

Glenelg Church of Christ FC played in the United Church FA in the 30's and 40's

I suspect it would be the other Sturt Football Club, now known as Marion
