Most number of players recruited from a rival club

Postby Pseudo » Fri Dec 09, 2011 10:42 pm

Bonjour les enfants,

With Sturt recently signing Ben Kane and Luke Panozzo of Glenelg, who will join John Hinge and Matt Duldig, it is possible that at some time next year Sturt may field a senior team with 4 ex-players of a rival club (Glenelg).

Should this happen, would it be some sort of record?

Racking the brains, the only example I can think of which would come close is when 3 Sturt players left the club in the wake of Merv Keane's sacking and all ended up at West Torrens.

Was it 1990 that Schache, Popplestone and Darryl Smith all left Sturt to go to Torrens?

In Round 7 1999, West had three former Norwood players in David Byrnes, Abraham Tomich and Matthew Twomey.

But there is definitely a case of four before:

Brodie Atkinson, Mark Soderstrom, Damian Squire and Sean Tasker had played in the same team for North on 11 occasions in 1994 and three times in 1995.

Progressively, they all found themselves at Sturt - Atkinson in 1996, Soderstrom in 1997 (with one season at Glenelg in 1996), then Squire and Tasker in 1999. Tasker also had two seasons at Glenelg in 1997 and 1998.

They played a total of 8 rounds in the same side for Sturt in 1999.

Spelly, had Frank Spiel retired before the three-headed Keane exodus reached Thebarton?

No, they all played together - Popplestone, Schache, Smith and Spiel (from John Storers book) in Round 1, 5-8 and 19 1990.

Did Daniel Lees, Roc Harry and Vinnie Rugolo ever play on the same day for Port?

No, but Lees did not play League for us anyway. Harry wasn't there when Rugolo was.

How many ex Port players played for Westies in the first game of, I think 1975. I think that Ray Hayes, Neville Thiele, Trevor Grimowood, Kevin Beswick and maybe one or two others like Bob Boston and one of the Brodericks may have played.

I am not certain of this but I just have vague memories of West under Fos Williams and with a lot of ex Port players beating the maggies who were certainly not happy.

What about ex Central players at North?

Not sure it eventuated but it could have been possible that in one North team, there could have been a combination or all of Rick MacGowan, Tim Cook, Ben Walton, Justin Casserly, Matthew Kreig, Josh Coulter and maybe Kym Vivian as well?

Possibly?

In 1988 North had four ex West Torrens players, Sims, J Roberts, Barratt and Tasker although I doubt that Tasker played league at Torrens. It's interesting to note that he appears in two lists.

I have found from the Westies website that Thiele, Beswick and Boston all made their debut for West that day. I assume that Grimwood would have played in that team as well which would make four players which seems to equal the record.

Ray Hayes didn't debut until later that year and Broderick the next year, so I guess there is some chance of more than four playing in the one side.

That team also had Chris Threadgold as captain, another ex-Rooster

There's been two lots of five players I've found who have played in the same team for two different clubs:

James Flynn, William Jackson, Frank James, Adolphus (Dolph) Skuce and Frank Verco played in South's last minor round game in 1900 and the two finals they played. Upon Sturt's entry the following season, they all had to play for them (living in their zone), and did so in Round 1.

In 1909, West had Albert Klose, the three Leahy brothers and James 'Sorry' Tierney play in Round 9. The Leahy brothers transferred to North in 1910 while Klose and Tierney joined them in 1911. They all played together in Round 7 and 11 of that year.
