1985 State game V WA

Saw some highlights of this game on a video recently and was just wondering whether this was possibly the greatest non state of Origin side we've ever produced. We destroyed WA at Subiaco by 87 points I think it was.

Am struggling to find the full side on the net but it appeared WA had a pretty hand side.

That was the game when Blight kicked a bag?

SA played very well that day.

Makes you think what an SA composite side in the AFL side would have been like if it entered the AFL in 87 when the WC Eagles did.

Blight (C), M. Aish, G. Anderson, A. Antrobus, C. Bradley, P. Bubner, M. Campbell, R. Cousins, R. Helyar, A. Jarman, S. Kernahan, B. Lindsay, G. McInstosh, P. Motley, M. Naley, J. Platten, M. Redden, J. Schneebichler, K. Thomas, T. Warhurst, G. Whittlesea.

Some "fair" talent in that line up.
For the record Kernahan snagged 7 goalsand Blight 6 goals.

No wonder the Vics had to **** over our comp before seriously wanting us to enter a side.

Could count on one hand the players from that team who never played or got drafted to a VFL/AFL team at some stage. Very, very good team. 8)

Would they be Bubner, Helyar, Schneebichler and Redden

I reckon Bubner may have been drafted at one stage??

Who did Michael Aish get drafted to? St Kilda? I wonder how close he was to crossing the border.

For some reason I thought it was Essendon, but you're probably more likely to be right with the Saints Geedub.

I liked Rolly as a footballer at the Parade, but was surprised he made a State team.

Aishy was never drafted (probably too old), but I'm sure he went to have a look at Essendon at one stage. Bubner was drafted by Carlton.

Michael Aish was heavily sought by Richmond in the early days, I think he signed a Form 4 but was never all that serious about going. It was either 1985 or 1986, Essendon talked him into joining them, he did some pre-season with them, but he sustained a back injury and returned to SA.

I was glad to have him back, but I would have loved to see him play at least 1 season of VFL, he would have been sensational. Same with McIntosh.

Thanks for coming up with side LL.

Think it's fair to say that some of those that didn't/wouldn't /couldn't go on with it at VFL/AFL level would have been very good players if they'd gone and I'm not surprised that Woodville initially had kittens at the end of this season when Blight said he was retiring as he still had it at 35 years of age.

A great goal by Bradley at one stage with a curling drop punt kick from hard up against the right hand boundary from 40 out was one of the highlights

I was getting very, very heavily into the SANFL by this time and was the same about Aish. Didn't want them to leave Norwood or the SANFL, but another part of me wanted to see how he would go in the biggest league.

Did he what?! ;) Very priveleged to have seen him play in the flesh, albeit it in the twilight of his career when he came back to Woodville. He was an incredible player, even at 35yo, as mentioned. Did the basics very, very well, but could also do (and often did) amazing things under pressure. True Legend of The Game. 8)

Now we just have to wait for SA Footy Video Archive to provide some footage of this clash ;)

You called?

The first 8 minutes of the video below is highlights of the match in question, the remainder is from the 1986 SA v WA game at Football Park, where they beat us by 7 or so goals. We have more of the 1985 game, will get to it eventually....

SA v WA, '86 was the first state game I went to.

First time I saw fireworks, too. Got bored with them pretty quick. Bored with them ever since.

IIRC, the Sandgropers were in control for most of the match.

But we hit back hard in the third quarter and got to within a straight kick or something.

Then they kicked away again...

I know this thread is old but as I found it..It saves starting a new one.

Does anyone have complete teams for WA aswell.

And the complete scores.

Thanks
