On page 72 of today's Advertiser there is an article about this match and
former North champ Bohdan Jaworskyj's attempt to find the tape of the
complete match.
Firstly, would Channel 7, Adelaide or Melbourne, have a copy of this buried somewhere,
and secondly, does anyone have any memory of this game.
My earliest recollections of these games is Glenelg wearing Yellow jumpers and socks
when they played Richmond in 1973.

I don't have much of a memory of the game as I was playing cricket that afternoon and never saw it. However, I do recall listening to parts of the game on the radio, and Carlton led for most of the game but Darrell Webb scored a goal late in the game to give North a 1 point lead, and they hung on to win.

What I remember most about those championships was the game on the Saturday when East Perth's Mal Brown belted the living suitcase out of the Carlton players, he just went nuts. North Adelaide earlier defeated Tasmanian club City South to qualify for the final against Carlton.

I tried to chase up a copy through Channel 7 in Melbourne. Rather than get someone who didn't really care that much about it I tracked down Sandy Roberts (being a commentator in the SANFL in those days) and asked his help. He was really great. He had a thorough search of the archives at 7 and the best he could manage to find was 90 seconds of highlights of the last five minutes of the last quarter including Webb's goal , Some pure magic by Robran and the siren going showing the players celebrating. Not much but better than nothing, and seeing Webb kicking the goal is spine tingling!
The thing that is odd is that Channel 9 in Adelaide don't have a copy. They showed the game there and Barrie mentioned that he had to go into their studios to collect a medal they presented for the best player in the series.

I noticed the picture of the "trophy" Bohdan was holding in the Tiser today is not in fact the actual trophy. That second picture of Bob Hammond drinking from the cup in LL post, I have signed by Bob and framed and sitting alongside my computer as I type!

So as not to offend people (including North supporters - same questions on the Roost from some) but the club has exhausted almost every avenue and has contacted every TV channel and the various media owners Australia wide in an attempt to find a copy of the game ("The search for North's holy grail" is what I like to call it!) so there is no point in people suggesting all the time to check with TV stations - that was done years ago - including some checks did through friends who are executives at C7 here in Adelaide.

The only avenue left (other than someone miraculously "bobbing" up with it) is the Rothmans film archives. I understand they have considerable storage in Sydney of unmarked film cannisters and Barry Dolman our Chairman is in the process of trying to organise a search of the the archives to check every film cannister to see if it is there by any chance. I understand that there are some "legal issues" to sort out re what cigarette content may or may not be on the footage if found.

All we can do is cross our fingers and hope that one day it turns up.

Yes and that is why there is precious little left of highlights of Robran from his pre-injury days!

At least you have the 1971 and 1972 Grand Finals. Do you have any footage of the 1973 1st Semi Final v Norwood at Norwood Oval? That was a pretty good game from Barrie as well.

Taping over programs was a pretty common practice back then.

Channel 10, being the cheap-@rses they are, were notorious for it.

Short of someone finding a copy in their garage, I imagine your best bet would be...

and Channel 9 did the same with World Championship Wrestling.

That's a shame, I would have loved to have seen Jan Janssen getting the crap beaten out of him one more time

I attended all games of the championship that year. While it was a great effort by the roosters who had a fantastic side at the time, do not underestimate the role that Mal Brown played in the roosters win. He belted the living suitcase out of 4-5 carlton players on the Saturday. I have video footage of the incident . Bruce Doull , Trevor Keogh and John Nicholls all weaved when they should have ducked and Brown "flushed" 'em.
If memory serves me correctly he got suspended for 2 games, some even in those days would have considered it a light sentence,but it must be remembered in was the sanfl tribunal!!!!!!!. The same effort in todays game -he would have got 12 months minimum.
Robran was at his peak and his game in the final was probably his best apart from his effort in the GF. i can recall him grabbing the ball from a centre bounce doging several tacklers, loping out of the scrimage as he was able to do, taking a bounce and after baulking an oncoming defender drilling a goal with his left foot from 50. The best player I have ever seen play the game.

Would have LOVED to have seen the guy play, but unfortunately i was born the year of the carnival......and Port's loss to the Roosters in the GF that year As has been mentioned, its a football "tragedy" that barely any footage of Robran exists to this day!

The part of the carnival that is most publicised is probably Jesaulenko stepping back and applauding, dont see that happening a lot today!!

Would have been awesome seeing him stand Russell Ebert, and some of the other champs from the 60's and 70's.

Can anyone who saw much footy in the 60's and 70's offer any opinions on how Robran went in state games against the Big V, and WA for that matter......and the game when that certain moron who now coaches a northern AFL club decided to take him out, did anyone see that incident live or on tv? And how well was he actually playing in that game before his injury?

Showing my age, but yes remember the game when Robran was cleaned up by Mathews and another Vic player.I seem to recall it was played in Sydney for some reason,and the incident occured late in the game.
Robran was an excellent interstate player and the vics respected his ability as well. At one stage I think carlton offered him Lygon st to go over but he was not interested.

Yes, the match was in Sydney, 2nd June 1974. Phil Carman kicked 5 goals for SA that day out of SA's 9. If memory serves me correctly, I think Robran signed with Carlton just to get everyone off his back, but he had no intention of playing for them. Such devotion to his club, it reminds me of McIntosh and his love for the Redlegs.

Barrie was a good state player but didn't really dominate any state games for some reason. I always recall the 1973 HF line against Victoria: Carman, Robran, Marker ... now that is a talented line up. I recall Barrie playing very well against Victoria here in Adelaide 1970, and against WA in the 1972 Carnival.

Just a note to GWW, I think it's a little harsh to be labelling Leigh Matthews a "moron". Although we are all extremely disappointed by the injury to Barrie Robran, Matthews was a champion in his own right. 340 games 915 goals, 8 club B&F awards, countless goalkicking trophies, 4 premierships as a player, and another 4 as a coach. Not too bad for a "moron"

I recall the '73 state match v vic at adelaide. On paper sa had a great side. Jesalanko bagged a lazy 10 on Ian Kroehn from centrals including a checkside from the players race boundary line after the halftime siren. Dean Farnham played a blinder for sa. Apart from those mentioned SA also had ebert,cornes and a young fella called blight came off the bench. If my memory serves me correctly Marker ran into an open goal in the dying seconds,kicked a point and we lost by 4pts. One of the best games I've ever seen- love to get a video of it!

Yes Matthews was a talented player theres no doubt about about that, but by my reasoning

Robran + Bruns = MORON

I also dont like the way he whines and whinges up in Queensland eg complaining about how the Lions had to give up Caracella due to salary cap pressues, ah der, Lethal, you only got him in the first place due to the Bombers salary cap problems!! Given how the Lions were given so much assistance from the AFL which ultimately had a huge say in their 3 in a row, i just think young Leigh should be grateful for what his club has received on a platter!!!!!

I'm hoping you and I are the same vintage because the earliest Grand Final I recall was South's win in 1964.

In 1973, I saw the two most spectacular games of footy involving the SANFL I have ever seen. The GF between Glenelg and North, and the State match you refer to. Everyone talks up the 1963 team who won in Melbourne, and rightly so. However, I believe that had the 1973 team defeated Victoria and ended a (then) 8 year drought, they would have been regarded as one of the best ever. It was a side selected purely on form, and past reputations counted for nothing. Here's the team:

Coach: Mike Patterson
F: Rick Davies, Max James, Terry Von Bertouch
HF: Phil Carman, Barrie Robran, Peter Marker (c)
C: Bruce Light, Bob Keddie, Michael Graham
HB: Russell Ebert, Neil Sachse, Darrell Cahill
B: Sonny Morey, Ian Kroehn, Neil Button
Ruck: Dean Farnham, Graham Cornes, Ray Huppatz (vc)
Res: Malcolm Blight, John Wynne

Poor old Ian Kroehn, he was in great form that year and deserved selection, but lacked the polish to compete with the great Jesaulenko. Had Bob Hammond been selected at FB for that match, I honestly feel we would have won the game as I doubt Jezza would have booted 10 on Hammond.

Carman and Marker booted 4 goals each for SA, and the best player were Huppatz, Keddie, Farnham, Carman, Cornes, Marker, Robran and Morey.
